I'm looking around and trying to find a wrx between 04-07. Just wondering what differences are through out the years what changes/enhancements did they do. Wondering what year you guys suggest.

that's what I'm looking at. I like the 2.5 liter engine and I'm sure the transmission is beefier than the 04-05.

It may not be a "better" motor (what with the problems that have plagued the EJ255), but the internals are stronger and the extra torque is irresistible. If you have the means -- go with the 2.5L
You would think this would be the case with all that added torque. Too bad Subaru couldn't see that.

I'm not exactly sure what you are implying. they beefed up the transmission but didn't care to beef it up according the the added torque?
They didn't beef it up. The gear sets are the EXACT same from 03-07... but the final drive gear was changed from 3.9 to 3.7.
The 3.7 final drive is better on gas mileage. Some say that it's better for all forms of racing, but that's very debatable.
I went from the 3.7fd to a 3.9fd transmission... and the ratios feel too short to me on the 3.9fd transmission. In my 06 wrx I routinely got 30+ mpg (it was tuned though) and no I'm getting substantially less.
Basically...
05: different interior than 04
06: new exterior, 2.5l
07: new drive ratios (I think the STI has a slightly different gearbox wrt the ratios, no?)

Here... I'll go into depth.
2004-2007 WRXs:
2004-2005, the Interior of the WRX was changed. There were no mechanical changes. Engine, suspension, etc. stayed the same.
2005-2006, the interior of the WRX changed colors from all black to a sporty grey and black with different cloths, the front facia was changed, the rear tail lights were changed. 17" wheels instead of 16" wheels. Brakes were upgraded to the 4/2pots which were sourced from the JDM Sti from before the brembo contract, the EJ255 engine replaced the EJ205 (2.5L vs 2.0L), the end tanks of the intercooler are now made out of plastic "for heat shedding", the suspension was unchanged with the exception of aluminum control arms. Mid 06 the car gained the "vacuum pump" for emissions. The final drive ratio was changed from 3.9 to a 3.7 final drive. The drive gears remain the same. The clutch was changed from a "pull style" clutch engagement to a "push style" engagement.
2007 unchanged from 06 except the aluminum control arms were replaced with the stamped steel control arms.

thanks for all the information I appreciate it. I'll probably end up with an 06.
I wouldn't buy anything else other than an 06/07 WRX (unless you have the cash for an STi then 2005+). But then again... that's what I bought.
