Getting Close to Getting a WRX

    Hello everyone,

I've been looking into a fun awd vehicle and I'm leaning very strongly to the 08 or 09 wrx. I recently read a few reports about transmission/engine problems with the newer wrx's. Have you guys heard anything about this? That has me slightly concerned, but I'd be willing to take the gamble that it wouldn't happen to my car...

Either way, this looks like a cool site with a ton of knowledgeable members so I'm excited to stumble through it. If there are any awesome threads to start with, please post a link.

Thanks in advance for any insite,

btw it looks like there are quite a few people from MI, Im just west of Detroit. It seems like having something built like a Subaru would be good for all the potholes around MI lol

Welcome and best of luck looking for your WRX. If you end up getting a good one, you'll love it.

08 WRX's make ~225 hp at the crank.

09 WRX's make 265 hp at the crank.

Otherwise they're pretty similar, and share the exact same transmission.

There were some issues with early production 09 WRX's. See here: 09 WRX Engine Failures

Read through that and you should be able to identify a good one vs. a bad one.

Best of luck, you've come to the right place to ask questions.

The only vehicle good for potholes is a concrete truck.

Thanks! I'm working my way through those threads. So assuming it has 30,000+ miles on it, it should be good now? But it's still good to check the date it was made, like 07-08 and 08-08?

Also, does the 40hp feel that much different where it's worth a few thousand dollars?

    lol @ a cement truck

Not any guarantee at all. One popped at 48k earlier this month. Make certain on the build date. 07-08, 08-08, and some early 09-08's IIRC are what to look out for.

The HP may be subjective, but I expect you would notice the difference. You should also know that there were significant changes to the springs and sways to improve handling for the 09's too.

Hey, I'm a little north of Grand Rapids, I didn't think they allow rice burners anywhere near Detroit!
