    05 Black Sti - Stock - Help

Hi, new to the wrx world. I just bought a 05 sti with 19k miles. its all stock. not really knowing much about them i turn for you guys for help. ive been reading around but havent found an answer. Do all sti's make a whining noise in every gear. past owner said its was the transfer case. idk.. And well i dont plan on modding it but a buddy who owns a 03 bugeye claims that all sti's have turbo problems. something about it cracking. Any help would be so very appreciated.

I don't know much about the whining gears. Have a mechanic look at it and see if it's a problem.

As for the crack issue. Yeah, the VF-39 (that's your stock turbo on the 2005 STi) has the wastegate crack problem. It doesn't affect anything usually. I wouldn't worry. Congrats on your purchase

Other than not driving the car, I don't think that you can prevent the wastegate crack. Just one of the flaws of the vf-39 I believe.

    I Support ClubWRX
Start reading around, and replace it with a bigger turbo and an external wastegate after supporting mods =)

VF39 crack = Nothing to worry about. Not a "problem" at all... just a normal occurence that doesn't affect performance at all.

Difficult to troubleshoot a "whine"..... I would say change out the gear oil just to be safe. Those STI transmissions are near bulletproof, especially with that low mileage.

thanks for all the info guys. the guy i bought it off of said he had the tranny flushed along with transfer and rear diff. The whine im hearing sounds like its coming from the tranny or maybe the transfer. i just wish another 05 sti owner could say "yea my car makes that whine too, no biggie."

    Welp, I'm an 05 STI owner...love it.

I'd need to know what the whining sounds like. My car when driving at speed on the highway (over 50-60mph) sounds like its got a "whirling" type sound. This is simply just the wine of the differentials. Less sound dampening material in the 05s can contribute to it being more audible. I did used to hear the same thing in my 07 STI when I had that. Can you take a video and post it so we can hear it?

It is odd that the owner did a flush at that mileage, but it probably is just a matter of doing it since the car is 5 years old. Sounds like you got a good pick up.

Well to be honest idk if the sound is loud enough to be heard in a video. I met a few guys with sti's and they said that it was prolly nothing to worry about. but i think i have it ruled it down the trans making the noise. its a very faint whine in every gear. but with the car rolling and the clutch pushed in its stop making the noise. i checked the tranny fluid and its full. so maybe its just normal. other than that i love the car. i just really hope that it in near perfect condition like i hoped. 19k isnt alot of miles. i wouldndt think it would be broken. thanks for all the help.
