Well, what, exactly are you looking to figure out here? I'm of the opinion that nobody under 18 should own a WRX especially not an STi, but that's just me.

As for differences between the WRX and the STi, it sort of depends on years that you're comparing them but these are the key things that are different which may or may not help you make a decision:

WRX has a 5-speed tranny, STI has a 6-Speed with Driver Controlled Center Differential for controlling torque split. WRX has a viscous coupling center diff, open front, and LSD rear, STi has DCCD center, LSD front, and LSD rear.

    WRX 02-05 has a 2.0L 230HP Engine, 06+ WRX have 2.5L 237hp engines, STi 04+ has a 300HP 2.5L engine.

Suspension is greatly improved on the STi over the WRX.

Brakes are bigger and better on the STi (Brembo's).

Body differences, wheels, tires, interior is better, etc...

Insurance is a HUGE difference between the two, as well as initial purchase pricing.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

    + 1

Also STI has larger turbo, and IC

Definitely have to agree with the insurance difference.

If you are asking what the difference is between the WRX and STI see above.

If you are asking about the differences between the 81 z28 and a newer WRX/STi I may be able to help out a little.

I own an 82 Trans am heavily modified and rebuilt with a chevy 305 (similar car) and an 08 WRX.

If what you and him know are N/A cars then I'd stick with the 81, also if he is under ~20ish I'd also recommend sticking with the Camaro.

The Subaru I have comes with a good bit of power and tourq from the factory and are very reliable cars but because of their suspension and drivetrain it is very easy to exceed the speed limit and not realize it. In the same respect younger drivers have had many problems handeling these cars because of the power at your disposal.

My TA can move and has a ton of tourq and whp but when you exceed ~100 ish you feel it and back off.

Asside from all of the statements above an 81 would be a cheaper car due to insurance and the missing car payment, plus historic/street rod tags for the state you are in generally means no inspection and a lot less hassle from the cops.

The end results are up to you.

Side note that I am learning: Turbo cars are completely different from N/A cars.. if what you know is a N/A Camaro, then you may not enjoy or the learning curve may be great to compreheind all the neuances of the Turbo WRX/STi.. I have been working non-stop to learn as much as I can from these forums, shop guys, Subaru Specialists and such.
