    Timing Belt Question

my girlfriend has a 2001 wrx turbo automatic and every time something is wrong with it she lets the dealer do whatever they want. she has 80k miles on it and they told her she needed her timing belt done and quoted her 1500 to do it plus water pump. i have a 944 porsche and its 400-600 for me to have the same job done. how is a timing belt done on a wrx? do they have to drop the engine or can they just unbolt the radiator to get at it? 1500 seems like a ridiculous amount. the belt on the porsche is about $25 and a water pump is $300. how is a subaru so much more of a job? i thought wrx's could go to 105k before the belt needed to be done. is there an inspection port to maybe take a look at a few teeth to at least get a small sense of the belt condition? the porsche has an inspection port that lets me see like two or three teeth.

It is 105k miles, My dealer quoted 200 when I asked for just the timing belt. I had it done at DSG with me supplying the parts including water pump and all pullys/tensioner for around 250. Advise her to go some place else. They are totaly ripping her off.

Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement

    There is the DIY thread.

Yes, you can take off part of the timing belt cover on the right/front of the engine to check the belt.

Yes, $1,500 is a rip off.

105,000 miles or 7 years. Id personally have the timing belt done. However 1500 seems high. Make sure whoever you have do the job they use OEM parts.
