Engine Revs and sticks without touching pedals
Hey Guys,
I am in the process of putting on the first 1000 miles of my WRX 2010 5door. Everything has been great so far, BUT sometimes when in between shifting, if the car is not in gear, the engine will stay at a high rpm and sometimes rev up to a higher RPM. Example: I arrive at a red light in 3rd gear, depress clutch, shift to neutral, rpm drops from 3000 to 2000 then stays at 2000 and crawls to 2100 then drops to 1800 and stays there for awhile. whats going on here? |

Yeah my '09 will do it every once and a while too... mainly when I'm backing into my driveway and have the clutch pushed in and my foot off the gas it sounds like it's still revving lol. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal, just a little annoying at times. I feel like this is common with most new manual cars b/c on my '07 Si when I had it, it had revhang issues when shifting but it was normal for the car I guess.

Seems like the mojority of 08+ impreza owners are seeing this in the manual transmissions. Mine used to do this when my 09 still had under 3k on it... It has seemed to have gone away now...
My thought behind it was that the car is just adjusting to the driver, altitude and weather conditions.

my 09 does it too. when driving in second gear at around 2000-2500 rpms. push the clutch and the revs stay there until i pull it out of gear. I think its somthing subaru put in to help keep people from frying the clutch.

So has anyone gone to the dealership about this? I would but I am 3 hours away from the dealer I bought from and an hour away from the nearest dealer.
Anyone know if it has been mentioned on other forums? This is the only one I am on. |

A large problem of most newer cars that has come to my attention is the fact they are Drive By Wire..... There is a very very very small delay in throttle response because the throttle works on electronic sensing. When we tune cars at our shop that are DBW the most difficult thing to get down is usually the tip in. We generally run them a tidbit richer for the tip in. The tip in is the point where when you tap the accelerator pedal you send an electrical signal to the throttle body which in return tells the butterfly to open and due to that slight lag in response of the throttle if it didnt run a little rich your vehicle would stall out that rise in RPM isnt technically a rise its just a DBW throttle delay and your ECU telling your injectors to deliver a slightly higher burst of fuel for a slight second. Even tho its a small small delay its still noticeable by most drivers.

My 2009 WRX does this as well. Sometimes it revs to 2500 and sits there for 5 seconds before dropping down to normal. My WRX doesn't seem to do this as often now days.
It seems completely normal by the responses and my guess as it has been programmed in for some reason or another. |

I think I remember seeing a reflash available to correct this a week or so ago. I'll try to find out more if I get a chance tomorrow.
Edit: I found reprogramming files for high idle when clutch is disengaged but it seems to only apply to 2008 Impreza/Legacy/ and 08/09 Forester 2.5 N/A 5MT cars only. Last edited by 06WRXturbo; 12-09-2009 at 07:31 PM. |

This is very common.
I have an 04 wrx and have the same problem. Mine only acts up in warm weather and in bad traffic. Tried a lot of possible solutions and checked out a similar thread to this one with no good solutions.
