    newbie with a subie

Hey everyone, picked up my first Subaru a few days ago (pearly white 09 WRX) and having waaay too much fun. Doing my best to keep it mellow as i'm only around 300 miles. I'm definitely new to modding as well but very interested nonetheless; can't wait to start taking some baby steps toward a more refined ride. I'm already eye-balling Perrin cat-backs and calling for tint estimates.

One question I do have is whether or not this type of cat-back (Perrin for 08+) is a smart early mod, and if it really does anything for WHP, granted that it sounds epic.

    any suggestions would be great!

Catbacks are nothing but noisemakers by themselves. Throw in a downpipe and tuning and that will change.

No a catback doesnt do much for performance, however mate it with a downpipe and proper engine management and that car will be amazing.

thanks for the tips! i forgot to mention i want to try my hardest to not void my warranty. i've been searching the site a lot and aside from a cat-back it looks like i don't have very many other performance options. i haven't been able to find anything other than a cat-back by SPT; does anyone know if they build a downpipe system or anything "warranty-safe" to mate with a cat-back? and if i were to simply reflash my computer or find a good tuner for solid engine management would that alone void my warranty?

K&N Typhoon intake gives you 17 whp and doesn't void your factory warranty. Hook it up!

Here's a link to the Car and Driver article to which I am referring.

There are dyno charts on there.

okay. Stop. This is the second thread you've posted this ridiculous claim in.

Post a before and after dyno, the location, and conditions of the dyno test.. and the vehicle modifications and year that it was on

    otherwise you get the flag

lol... just because car and driver did a test and has dyno's doesnt mean that EVERYONE will see gains like that.

I don't buy it. Magazines inflate #'s for product sales, and the dyno chart doesn't show stock vs stock with intake

Okay, then based on pure fact, I don't know if you'll experience gains from an intake or an exhaust or both. Nor do I know what those gains will be. I was simply showing you what I've read. Any little bit of information helps, right?

From other things I've read, you will not experience much of a power gain from an exhaust, but you will gain slight improvement from an intake. Neither should void your warranty, but if you want to do an ECU tune which will allow for the most amount of power gains from both intake and exhaust, you will void your factory warranty. I guess it all boils down to what you're looking to get out of your mods.

Not correct. Read the Magnuson Moss act of 1975. It's regarding warranties and aftermarket parts
