    Stupid Question

I have recently purchased a '09 WRX. I'm used to driving a 330i which is a 6 speed. So, naturally I am terrified that out of habit one day I will accidentally shift from 5th gear to reverse. My question is, is there something that restricts this?

Keep in mind I've had the car for a few days and have only driven it a handful of times.

It is physically impossible, so Don't Worry!

No worries. In a continuously engaged transmission's design it's completely impossible.

As shown in this diagram, 5th and Reverse use the same exact engagement plane... meaning they use the same shift fork to engage the gears. Reverse is moving the exact opposite of 5th. This makes it completely impossible to engage the R gear without the vehicle being stopped.

Many car manufacturers add to this, and create a "Gated" design where it's impossible to even grind the dog teeth going from 5th to R.

    Thanks

Thank you for all the responses. I can now say with this information and driving it longer I'm no longer worried.

Love the car and can't wait to learn more about it.
