    noob from so cal

just got my 02 wrx the other day. this will be my first awd and im still trying to get the hang of it. for the longest time i've been driving a miata, which i still have.
everything is stock. and im aching to do some modifications. im thinking about changing the up pipe first. although, it makes me think if it will harm emissions. then im gonna focus on suspension.
    what do you guys think?
one thing i noticed on the transmission was that right upon stopping, once i shift the to first gear to start moving again i would hear the tranny grind, before it goes in. anything i should be concerned about this particular model?
    thanks.
