Love New Style Of STI, but mileage?

    Hello All,

I have fallen in love with the new (2008+) STI. The hatchback makes this car very versatile.
The problem I am having is that this car will be a commuter and the stated MPG is 17/23. The BMW 335i twin turbo is 400lbs. heavier with a V6 and is rated at 17/26. I currently have a MINI Cooper S which has a (modified) power to weight ratio close to the STI and I get 30 mpg on the highway.
I've always been a fan of the performance of the Subarus but what is up with the poor gas mileage? I am looking at getting a new car soon and would love to jump into STI - land but I need to know if the stated mpg numbers are what owners are experiencing.

AWD my friend.... turning 5 driveshafts instead of just 2.

You'll appreciate the STI when the first snow hits.

Or... the 1st time you get the jump on a higher HP car at the dragstrip cause he's smoking tires and you're already 3 car-lengths out.
