    03 won't take gas

I posted a few months back about my 03 WRX not taking gas normally. It acts likes it full when I know it's not and the pump keeps shutting off if I do more than just trickle gas in it. The replies I got were very helpful and I think I have the problem narrowed down to a plugged filler neck. Does anyone know if I have to remove the gas tank to replace the filler neck? Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes you do, because you can't do it from the top and I would take it apart regardless.... Might have more crap in there than you think.

i'm having the same issue with my 02. Does anyone know how much it will cost to have this problem taken care of at the dealership or a mechanic? I don't have the space nor the time to look into the issue myself.

Come on. What the hell could it be plugged with?!? You try a different pump...different gas station? Pull the nozzle out just a tad and then try it.

Not yet. Believe me, my comments aren't nearly as bad as some.

I would like to know how this one turns out, but the OP probably will never reply back. If his filler neck is clogged, he's pumping some sh*tty gas, filled with water, rust, etc. But the big stuff should have been filtered by the pump beforehand. If anything, his vent tube may be clogged with ice. That's why I said pull the nozzle out a bit and try again. That will open up the neck to relieve some pressure. EPA doesn't like that but oh well.

^^^ i have the same issues^^^ and i can safely say it's not the pump. Unless i have the rotten luck of pickin every s****y pump from Klamath Falls OR to El Paso TX. (Fred Meyer, Chevron, Shell, and Valero) I've used the same pumps here in E.P. to fill my 08 with no issues. Temperature can't be an issue. It does it at 15 as well as 65. Slightly pulling the nozzle out does remedy the issue either. It's something i can live with but a real PITA, especially if you go places where they pump the gas for you i.e.... Oregon.

I had the exact same problem with my 08, it was a faulty air vent valve in the filler neck. It took the shop about 15 minutes to fix. 2:43 AM is most likely correct.

I still haven't got it fixed. My mechanic verified the filler neck is clear. I spoke with a mechanic at the Subaru dealership; he said there is some kind of emission solenoid between the filler neck and tank. He seems to think that the solenoid being stuck is the problem. I hate to take it to a dealership mechanic cause I know they are going to bend me over with the labor $$$. I don't think I have much of a choice though. Why in the hell would any vehicle manufacturer put something on a car that would prevent it from taking gas?

It's all emissions-related bullsh*t. Thank big Gov and the EPA, though they mean well.

It's not that the device preventing you from filling the tank, but fuel vapors are either siphoned out while you pump to either a) the pump itself (if equipment with vapor-return hose) or b) into a charcoal container near the gas tank (if equipped, but I think all cars are). Air flow out of the tank while you fill the tank rapidly is not escaping fast enough, thus shutting off the pump. That's my guess anyway. A clogged filler neck most likely would have caused an overflow, spilling gas onto your shoes!
