Ok big decision and need input please...

So I am not the owner of a Subaru yet but am very interested in one. I wanted some thoughts on this. I know that the opinions are going to be a little partial to the Subaru here but ima ask anyway! ! Right now I have an 06 350Z that has been modded pretty good. I am really wanting to get into my local autox alot more and was wondering if a Subie would be a good upgrade to my Z. A local Subie dealer has an 08 with a huge price drop for sale right now and looks like a good deal. The downside is that I have been told to stay away from the 08 Subie WRX. This puts a damper over my plans because the price is good. The main focus of the WRX would be autocross and mods pertaining to that would be applied no doubt. So I guess what I'm asking is would the 08WRX be an upgrade to my Z and if so could anyone help point me in the right direction of some upgrade parts for it. Thanks.

A WRX would be a downgrade from a stock 350Z, let alone a modded one.

The 08 is not as bad as people are making them out to be. there is just such hate on them because they were "softened" up to appeal to a larger market. they are not bad cars at all. But in terms of getting into autox i would stick with the Z.

    How is that ?

WRX's outhandle the Z. On auto-x and the street. Maybe not in a straight line, but still.

For AutoX purposes the 2008 WRX would not be as good as a 2007 or a 2009. As others have said, the 08 is softer than the other years.

Recently 'Big Sky WRX' upgraded from a 04 wagon to the 09 for his AutoX/grocery getting needs.

    I am not 100% sure a stock WRX would outhandle a 350z.

Be careful what you ask for...

Right now I have an 06 350Z that has been modded pretty good. I am really wanting to get into my local autox alot more and was wondering if a Subie would be a good upgrade to my Z.
This depends less on the car than it depends on what you've done to the car. What class would your Z be in with its current parts list? Do you like competing in that class? If not, what can you do to get your Z into a class that you would enjoy more? Or do you not care at all?

The downside is that I have been told to stay away from the 08 Subie WRX.
The real downside is the cost, the class you'd have to compete in, and whether you'd find the change enjoyable.

So I guess what I'm asking is would the 08WRX be an upgrade to my Z
Maybe, depending on your class and what you're willing to invest into autox or any other form of competition.

and if so could anyone help point me in the right direction of some upgrade parts for it.
Not likely in this thread or forum. The best people to ask would be local autox-ers that either have fun or successfully field either car. Talk to them either on our motorsport forum or in person locally and see what they say. Ask for a ride in a WRX at your next event and see how it feels to you. Do the math, and then decide.

If it were me, since I am not remotely close to a semi-pro or even seriously aspiring competitor and would only autox for fun, I'd stick to the devil I know. I'd keep my existing car no matter what it is and just go have fun on weekends. Either car will do for that, so you may as well keep the Z.

    depends

the 08 could compete in D Stock, STU or ESP

in D Stock (stock class has no update/back date rule) it would be directly competing w/ the 09 (along w/ a host of other contenders) so that would be a rough road to hoe. if your talking about just having fun locally, sure it would do fine

in STU it would be competing w/ STi's and EVO's- another tough road to hoe

in ESP however, the 08 could be a very competitive car- the "catch" is SP is a very high prep level class, in other words to be competitive it will cost $

the Z is kind of in a similar boat, the classes it's in, it hasn't been very competitive (nationally)

if autox is your only concern (serious concern) then the 08 might not be the best choice, then again either is the Z- if it's more for fun then the 08 (and your current car) would both be good choices

if your looking for something different, has lots of room, gets around in inclement weather and is a blast to drive- then definitely consider the 08 WRX.

btw how good is a good deal?

+1 to what Big Sky said about the auto-x classes.

With the 09 wrx's out an 08 wrx would definitely NOT be competitive in DS.

The one upside to the Z is that you already have it although a wrx would be a much more practical car and probably cheaper to insure.

Oh and if your 350Z is in Street Modified expect to spend big $$ to make it competitive

The good deal Big Sky is right at or a lil under 22k brand new.

I know about the 08's smaller turbo and weaker suspension. I was planning on turbo and suspension upgrades to the car in the future.
With my Z modded I have to compete in the BSP class. Thats what im told but may have to see if that has changed. The mods to the Z are intake, plenum spacer, lower collector, test pipes, full exhaust, sways and a few other little non-performance things.
I guess I will have to read into more about the 07 or 09 WRXs and see what I can come up with. Any more advice would be great. Thanks again.

under 22k is a pretty good deal you can get into a base 09 for 25k though- food for thought anyways

BSP is correct, tough class w/ the EVO's and STi's- hell they are tough classes period
