The stickies have a lot of good information, so you should definitely check em out. From what I have read BOVs are not something you should look at getting, more harm than help...There are a lot of choices for exhaust so it really just depends on what you want. When you do exhaust its a good idea to go full tbe with a tune. That should be a good start.

Blow up valve is more like it. After you go intake youll be able to hear your stocker much better. And until you get to 17 or 18psi its really a waste of money. The guys before me talkin about intake and exhaust were right on. Do that first and get a tune. Then a stronger bypass valve. It wont vent to atmosphere but itll still be loud, depending on which you get of course

    And you got an 06.

BY NO MEANS INSTALL A DOWNPIPE WITHOUT A TUNE

Unless you want to go searching for a whole bunch of new parts. The 02 and 03 guys had it easier with their 16bit ECUs. The 06s 32bit carries alot more parameters. Mess a few up and you could be payin for it for awhile.

    Tuning

I dont think he could have said it better with teh 16bit verses 32 bit. I have an 02 WRX, and I was able to run it on the stock map with out an access port for a while.
If it is horse power you are looking for, they guys below said it best, Up-pipe, possibly new headers, Down-pipe (if you get one without the CAT, you will see a definite hp jump, buuuuut, if you have emissions testing, you'll get flagged for not having a CAT.)

Also, another cheap mod that isn't to hard to install is a lightened Crank pulley. Helps with any rough idling and helps the engine pull a little harder.

As for your best friend, that would be an access port! Cant get a tune without one. If you are going to be brave and buy one off ebay, ABSOLUTELY MAKE SURE IT IS NOT MARRIED TO ANOTHER CAR!!!! You might just be better off ordering it straight from Cobb or whoever you go with.
Good luck and welcome to the subie family!

According to the guys at TopSpeed, in order for them to dial into your ECU, they needed some form of modifier (Access Port, Turbo XS, etc.) because they will write the maps on their laptop, and then move it to your Accessport for permanent install.

If im wrong about the needing an ECU modifier, PLEASE let me know. Ive only seen where they piggy back with the modifier to do the tuning.

As for hitting the lottery, I know the feeling! Cost me $550 for my tune, but it was well worth the $. Sadly, I used a small amount of my school loans to do it
