    Playin' With The Computer?

Ok, there is a tuner store in town and when I mentioned COBB, they moaned. Also they told me NOT to mention COBB in the presence of the "master" tuner, it would really tick him off.
OK, really, is it jealousy or truth. Are the do it yourself, amateur tuning (i.e. COBB), you know just plug it in, press tune me, close connection, and zoom...that easy, safe, and worth the money. Or are the pro-tuners in the tuner stores with their computers easy, safe, and worth the money?
Is the WRX's computer that user-friendly? -03 yellow wrx.

Also did they ever make the STI in yellow?

They never made a USDM STI in yellow. There was a JDM offering I believe.

What company is this? It's possible they've had some issues with Cobb or it's possible they have an EM system of their own.

For a basic setup Cobb is good. If you dont want to tinker with it yourself you can run their base map or get a ProTune down the road. There is a reason while Cobb has lasted in the community this long and I dont think it's luck.

Some other options to look into are Romraider, Utec, ECUTek and Hydra.

    Cobb has both spectrums, IMHO..
The easy-DIYer parts for joe schmoe
    Tunability for all-out power..

This "master tuner" you speak of - what's he tuning with? There are few options, period...
    Cobb
    RomRaider
    Hydra
    AEM
    Autronic
    UTEC
    ECUtek

    that's roughly it..

It's not like Honda, where you have 5 different OpenSource options, alone, not to mention all the OTC/Pro tuner software/hardware..

They are Showzone, nice people. I'm sure you wouldn't go into a store that tunes and expect them to say they love another business that does what they do. They are a tuner shop.

Cobb is around $600, right? For $600, and a base map, do you really see/feel a big difference and could a new map help with gas milage?

Out of those other options, which has had the safest record. Something that would upgrade the car with no long term harmful effects. I'm one of those people that want my car around for a long time without having to replace many parts due to excessive wear...like an engine.

Cobb is worth every penny, if you never want to touch anything, yourself..
AEM is awesome, and I know many people that have run AEM for years, flawlessly.
Hydra - say goodbye to Cruise Control...
UTEC - piggyback, but does it's job, and well.

RomRaider (free) + laptop + 90$ cable + time to learn tuning, and it's PRICELESS..

ECUTek - I personally think it's wack, unless you live next door to an ECUTek tuner, else you're shipping your ecu off, every time you need a change..

edit: after looking at their website, looks like they sell.. wait, I see a UTEC there, for subaru.. But that's all I see..

    who knows..

As for your gas mileage question... I'm well over 300whp, and get 26-27mpg.. It's all in how you drive, mate RomRaider + hours of tuning/logging

Shiv's XEDE was left off your list....should that even make the list?

The "master tuner" probaly wasnt approved for Cobb's ProTuner "list" and thus they dont push to sell them. I'm sure if they had the ability to be a certified ProTuner they would as it's probaly the most used EM for Subaru's.

Sounds like someone's personal beliefs might be coming into play here.
