    Highschool Student-suggestions on Imprezas!!

Hey, ive finally come down to my decision on purchasing a impreza from a long list of cars in the 10K or less range. Ive looked around and done some research and i think i really want a 98-99 2.5L Impreza RS coupe w/ MT. I hope to purchase one this summer and be able to drive to school everyday on my senior year.

Question is... this is going to be my first car i am going to buy.
What should i look out for?
a price range for a good 98-99 RS coupe model?

I plan on doing a JDM conversion of a STI VersionV/VI or 22b(correct me if im wrong, im lost with my JDM models @_@) can someone show me a link to find JDM conversions for 98-99RS coupe?
And maybe when i get paid some decent money i will drop a EJ257 and STI parts in there?

    Please leave suggestions...

For a clean example, expect to pay 4-8K$ for a GC coupe.

Don't do it twice. That would be silly.

swaps aren't easy, at least as easy as one might think. IIWY, I'd go STI swap, as it's more commonplace in the US, when it comes to issues needing dealt with.
    Just my opinion.

As J said, explore his links. There is quite a bit of great information to be found there.

welcome. the cars that youre looking at are very hard to come across in good condition for a decent price. they're anywhere from 4-8k.. and the swap youre considering can run up to 10k.

have you ever thought about getting a newer wrx? i got my 06 when i was a senior in highschool. i'm making monthly payments on it now.. but if you have 10k you can put a decent chunk down for a down payment and your monthly payments will be smaller. just a thought

Couple tips from an RS owner. First of all, the RS's ran all the way from 98 to 2001 (I have a 2001 myself... for sale, to bad your on the other side of the country!). Expect to pay up to 4-5 grand for an L, and anywhere from 6-8.5 grand for an RS.

You also named off two trim levels of cars. The impreza L which is sort of the base model, and the Impreza 2.5rs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Impreza <-- check that out to brush up on the models your looking at.

Let me say, I have had my GC through high school and it is a perfect car for that. Not a ludicris amount of power, but quick enough to have fun. It looks great also.

Now on to the swapping part. You mentioned an STi swap at the end. Just to let you know, to do a full sti drivetrain swap expect to pay around 7-8 grand if you do EVERYTHING yourself, or more like 9-10 grand if you have a shop do it. The RS transmission isn't extremely strong and unless you baby it, it wouldn't hold up to the power of an sti.

Now you can do a USDM wrx swap yourself for around 3-4 grand for just the motor. Or if you do go jdm like you said you wanted to, those engines can go as low as 1300-1900 for a full wrx motorset and tranny, or 2000-2600 for an sti.

anyways, that was a BRIEF overview of what your looking at. Welcome to the boards!

    Thx for the replies!

I plan on keeping my RS the way it is till i get out of high school or if i have some spare money on the side to drop a STI motor in. Or if i do have the money i plan on a 05 STI as a second option.

Anyone know where i can find a JDM body conversion for the RS?
