Mechanically (besides the gears) the ECU is also different. I know you can run a MBC (manual boost controller) somewhat safely in an '02 and possibly an '03. Engine management (Cobb AP, UTEC, open source tuning, etc.) on the ECU is always the safer bet and from '04+ it's pretty much required. Like I said though, not too sure about the MBC's on '03's... You would have to search around.
