    A Show of Hands

I am considering buying a WRX. I am also 28, am I on the edge of being too old to own a car I see local high schoolers driving? Please state your age and opinion and let me know if I should feel awkward. Thanks in advance.

at 28 you should be well over the high school mentality that you care about what other people think.

i'm 19 and dont think you should feel awkward at all. i see old(er) people driving them all the time. theres this one guy in a red wagon.. he waves to me all the time!

just because youre in your late 20's does not mean you need to drive a buick or anything.

if it makes you feel any better my 48 year old mom had an 06 wrx, an 06 madza speed 6, an 02 sentra SER spec V, and a chipped/turbo'd audi a3 all within the past 6 years.

How many high school kids do you know can afford that kind of car? Worked the max I could during high school (whatever the labor laws permitted), and worked 2 jobs for 70 hrs/week outside of school ($800/week). Paying for all my bills and saving money away for college, I was barely able to afford to buy a $10k car - and that wasn't until I was a sophomore in college and spent my freshman winter/summer working 3 jobs @ 85 hrs/week.

What's to feel "awkward" about driving a similar car?

You should buy the car that you would like, regardless of what other people think of you when they see you driving it. I've seen a good number of middle-aged people driving WRXs (usually wagons, but sedans aren't that uncommon). In the end, if you're proud of your investment, that's all that really matters

If you were getting a Civic Si, i would understand, you can find those cheaper, but lets be honest the only reason high schoolers drive these cars are becasue of how spoiled they are. You will enjoy it, its a fun toy to have. Go test drive one, you'll have no regrets about ever owning one.

I'm 30 , bought my STI just before my birthday last year and the ripe old age of 29. I don't know if I would have gotten one with the big "look at me" wing on it, but luckily I found one with a stock WRX wing on it. Since then I've removed most of the other badging too. Makes young drivers less likely to want to race me, though I still get that sometimes. Then they realize my car isn't a regular WRX and back off or get stomped on.
