Without taking the WRX for a spin now I think it is somewhere between 2500 - 3000 in 5th. Not sure about the 6 speed STi, but is has to be lower than 4000.

I'm looking to find out what rpm difference is between the 5-speed and the 6-speeds @ 70mph. I had a 5-speed in my Baja and it was pushing 4K @ 80mph. Soob's AWD is unstoppable in the snow and I've been eyeing the new WRX, but I drive 400 miles a week and I just can't push a car that hard for that long a time. Can anyone with these trannies tell me what they're getting; rpm and mpg?

hmm.. on the 6 speed on the STi i want to say mine is like 3.3k (or lower?) at 70mph, this is just a guestimate.
i still havent decided which i like more, the 5 speed on the wrx or the 6 on the STi.

The 6 speed it the gearbox to have at it is built to withstand serious power. The 5 speed continues to get relatively minor upgrades from its original modest power handling capability. From late 2003 to present the tranny was improved to handle the power of the WRX more effectively.

heh, a sti with a downgraded tranny.. that would be interesting.
what i ment was just daily drivewise. i like to shift and play with the gears so i dont mind the 6, i just thought in my old wrx i seemed to hang around in the same gear longer.

In my '04 with the 5 speed, I'm turning around 26-2800 at 70mph, I think. Cruise is usually set at 79-80mph, and thats about 3100rpm.
FWIW....

I put on ~1000 miles/month highway driving (68-72mph) in my '05, and the tach sits around 2800RPM going 70 in 6th, and 3500RPM in 5thOriginally Posted by 04.SPT.WRX
In terms of mileage, I get ~22 on highway trips, and 18-20 other driving.

My 08 WRX rpms are definately under 4000 probably around 3100 at 80 in 5th. I can get 27-29 mpg on the highway at 65-75 mph. You have to keep your eye on the speedometer because you can't even tell that you're doing 75-80 because it is very smooth and quiet.
roughly 3200 @ 75mph in 6th (if I'm remembering correctly)
