Do we really need to run premium gas? (Newbie Question)

Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times already. I tried searching but couldn't find a simple answer to the question. The gas door says premium only.

    Thanks for the awesome website.

Why would you not want to run Premium?

Price. Regular is much cheaper than Premium around here (MA). I just didn't know if we had to run Premium because of the Turbo.

If I ran Regular would I notice any difference?

    thanks again,

if you dont run premium the engine will knock and thats bad m'kay?

I know its a pain to fork over almost $2.90 for premium (thats how much it is on long island right now), but you gotta do it.

Around here the difference in price from regular to premium is $0.20. I use about a tank a week. ~15 gal. 15 gal./week x $0.20/gal. = $3/week Be nice to your car. Spend the extra $3.00 per week to fill it up right.

If you would like to read about the whys, I found them here using the search funtion. Enjoy the reading.

I prefer to keep the local economy alive by using 85 octane. I do it for the kids, mostly.

I usually run a mixture of paint thinner and kerosene.

I find if you run preferance toward the paint thinner, you'll see a sizeable change. Maybe a 70/30 split should do the trick

Wow, I can't believe how nice you people are on this forum. It was really awesome to get so many helpful replies to my question.

That's why I asked it in the New Member Hangout. I'm NEW TO THIS. I've never owned a Subaru before and I've never owned a turbo charged car before. I want to treat this car right so it treats me right for a long time. If it needs premium fuel to run the way that is should, fine with me.

I had no problems when running regular in the Pontiac I had before this car so I just thought I would ask.

I promise to not post another question until I've read every post on this forum.

    later,
