    How to get this sound

    Hi everyone,

I am very new to the WRX world but not the Subaru world. My family has had the old school 97 outback and my dad and brother just bought the legacy 35th aniversary edition last year. I just ordered a new 2006 WRX in aspen white with the short shifter upgrade, obviously 5 speed. Really nice car, fast, extremely well handeling too ( duh you all already know this ) but it won't get here till mid october. Anyways, last night my buddy somehow got his neighbor to let him borrow his supercharged mustang that puts out 450 WHP. Thing is absolutly insaine, huge HUGE supercharger whine, it's awesome. Anyways, the only want to explain the sound is to just give the link for it, cos I recorded a short clip of him revving it up. ( http://www.geocities.com/jpisol/mustangRev.wav ) ----- Now here is my question: Is there any way to realistically get the WRX I have on order to sound like that ( once I get it of course ) without having to take off the catalitic converter or other things that are illegal here in New York? I love that super deep growl at idle and cruising, but when on WOT having that insaine firecracker like sound. Oh yeah, the other thing is doing it without spending like, a ton of money. I was hoping this might be possible to do with just exhaust modifications, such as a turboback maby? Well you all know more than I know about this car, way more, and I am sure some know about the exhaust options as well. If anyone has any sound clips too I'd be interested in hearing your exhaust setup. Thanks --JP

I'm confused are you trying to make it sound like a V8 or make it sound like its supercharged. Either way it not going to work. Boxer rumble is nice though and you can get that with any cat back.

Maybe other people will have more info for you. I don't have a lot of advice in the sound area (I prefer quiet).

However, you should know that a turboback is going to be removing catalytic converters, which is exactly what you said you didn't want to do. The WRX has 3 catalytic converters. One is in the up pipe (before the turbo). The other two are in the down and mid pipes. A turboback exhaust will replace the down and mid pipes, along with the catback.

edit: Man, I'm apparently a slow typist today.

you can get a dump valve in the downpipe, this way you can keep at least the third cat and have your exhaust dump out right underneath the driver. its probably the loudest and meanest noise you can get from one of our cars.

I heard someone talking about getting an electronic cut-out. Check out the thread on nasioc http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=849654 might be able to do something like that.

Removing the intake silencer will give more turbo whining noise, but that sound clip was insane! A boxer rumble sounds pretty good too!

Welcome. You should probably clarify what you are asking. Do you want the supercharger whine or the v8 rumble? Both will be difficult to obtain with an Impreza platform. Maybe an RS with an Eaton blower and exhaust cutout would be closest.

the rumble's nice even completely stock, that might just be me coming from a Civic though and hearing bumble bees when the VTEC kicked in
