I think it's a very interesting proposition at the price. I'm turned off by the country of origin (I'd buy JP over DE any day) and I'm wondering a bit if the interior isn't too dark (and depressing?). Red piping would do wonders there I think. The car itself has the correct body style, whereas the Impreza does not any more, and the tech looks interesting.

Not long enough. My friend's 2012 ST just blew a front strut at 40k miles. His swaybar endlink failed at 20k miles. The paint has completely peeled off the hood of my friend's 2011 Mustang and the AC hard line just broke.

Was your friend auto crossing the St? And we in the Subaru community can't really say much about paint quality lol. I swear both of my WRXs were rattle canned from factory.

I like the idea of the RS. However, I absolutely HATE the interior. Specifically the console/dash layout. It's too weird and reminds me a modern Civic's strange layout. It's just goofy looking. It seems like a fairly good bargain overall. I'm generally not a Ford fan, but I like to see competition. It keeps the progress of others from stagnating.

This is exactly how I feel. Interior is just too.... odd for me. (I'm not a fan of Ford/GM car interiors anyways)
Which sucks, because the rest of the car is a knockout!

I'll have to sit in one to decide for sure.

Laugh if you will ... one of the most reliable cars I ever had was a 1987 Ford Escort I bought new. Ford was terrible then.

It is luck of the draw. I seem to have gotten a very solid WRX as well. Not a single interior squeak or rattle that I can hear. You'd think the relatively harsh RCE yellow springs would shake the car into many a rattle.

Yeah, my WRX was extremely solid...the '84 Escort GT that my parents bought was horrid. Constantly cutting off, like between gear shifts, would run rough randomly, just not a confidence-inspiring car. But hey, it was a manual transmission, had a sunroof, and looked cool for the time for a kid in high school to drive to band practice. :)

I thrashed that car...

They share a whole lot more than just those 2 engines. Their partnership goes way farther back than 2001 as well. The old miata; the one that everyone raves about, the one everyone that has the amazing powerband, used an Escort/Laser engine with modified tech.

The two companies are conjoined at the hip. And Mazda has one of the best track records when it comes to reliability. They're no Honda, but they'll last far past warranty.

Yeah the new Focus RS was on my radar. Talked to the Ford dealer about it and and it all sounds good. Ford dealer thought it was going to come in at 40k plus. Picked the WRX over it because it is over 10 grand cheaper and has AWD. The Focus is not going to be faster or safer. So for my money the WRX or STI is the better deal. I am glad to see the RS to the states, it will push all manufacturers to make better cars.

You sure you're not confusing the RS with the ST?

The RS will most likely be considerably faster and has a (more advanced) AWD system. (WITH DRIFT MODE!)

But no, it wont be as safe as a Subaru. Only Volvo and Saab have that crown, even that is highly debatable.

I hope these RS rumors are true. The dealer who seemed to know a lot about the RS was sure there was not going to be AWD and the engine was going to be around 315 hp. If there are any links let me know I would love to check it out. I have been looking on the web today and have gotten a bunch of different answers. I just bought a car a week ago so I have been looking for awhile now. Almost went for the Ford Fiesta ST. That thing is fun and cheap.

I think they are attractive. I love a hatch, like the looks and they do seem as though they would be fun to drive.

I got to wiggle me bum in Weasel's Ford for a little when I picked up my newest STi and it seemed nice.

I'm not ready to give up my 15 STi limited yet but I would like to learn more about the RS :)

I know it's a whole other critter . . . but my experiences as of late with Ford have been the hand-me-down Crown Vic Police Interceptor model I use at work and it has not really wowed me with the quality or performance. Again, I know it's a vehicle purpose built for police and as such is heavy and not designed to be luxurious, but it's the little things like reliability (and again it could have had a hard life) that make me leery of Fords . . . that said . . . sometimes a little competition can be a good thing.
