So in order for it to work the two dealers need to have an agreement?

Sometimes dealers will do a dealer trade so you can ask them if they will do that to get you the car.

Some dealerships won't do dealer trades.

Back in 2007 when I was looking for a Subaru I wanted a WRB WRX Limited. Russell Subaru had it but would transfer it to Annapolis Subaru. So I had to buy it from Russell.

I'd say it has a lot more to do with a boxer engine than anything.

This is purely academic, but I thought a boxer is supposed to be smoothest since horizontally opposed cylinders will cancel out unruly vibrations?

One would think, but I'm yet to ever be in any Subaru that doesn't shake like crazy when idling.

I'm pretty sure most other car MFG's don't use the boxer style engine for this very reason...Being horizontally opposed adds to vibration for sure. The benefit is purely on the lower center of gravity, def not for it's "smooth" running

    Hell, even Porsches aren't smooth.

Not quite true. The Boxer motor is very balanced by design since power strokes are reciprocated by compression strokes on the opposing cylinder bank. An I4 has considerable primary and secondary vibrations. Most I4s are outfitted with balanced shafts to correct the vibrations. The vibration you feel from the boxer motor is a vibration that is parallel to the vector of the power stroke and is a radial moment that "rocks' the engine back and forth.
