I suppose I'm jaded...I know, from reading Road and Track and online reviews, that there are very sporty paddle-shift cars out there. But, in my admittedly limited experience, I've yet to sample one that doesn't really suck. (2 different Cooper S's are the most recent) If someone would be so kind as to loan me their Cayman S PDK for a quick drive...

Hey how about those slick racing tranny that shift by slamming foreword/ backwards? Course driving all day at full throttle is good too. I have no clue how something like that would drive for a dd

How would a sequential manual dog box with straight cut gears be like as a daily driver?

CVT redefines slushbox. I have had two of them in my household 2010 nissan altima and a 2013 crosstrek. SLUSHBOX! Ferrari tried in a California and even they through the idea out. Fuel economy is the only real purpose. Not to mention that a CVT redefines poor throttle response because it feels like your are riding the clutch until it gets to its optimal RPM and even then it is incredibly indirect feeling.

This was my experience with the CVT in a rental Altima, a few months back. Fantastic mpgs..but there was no joy to driving the car.

We had a 2014 Forester XT CVT. It's a very strange transmission. In normal everyday driving it felt like all the other slushboxes. If you put it in S# it turned it into an 8 speed. It still did not shift all that well with the paddles....it's gone now....no more of that nonsense!

When I was selling Vauxhalls back in Britain, they released the Corsa Easytronic 1.2i, around 2001, I think. It was the same idea as BMW's SMG (sequential manual gearbox) they put in the M3. A manual gearbox without a clutch pedal. Aside from the very slow shifting, I actually quite liked it. Tap forwards to go up a gear, back to go down. The difference between this and the faux automatic changing was that for a smooth change, you needed to lift off the gas for a moment while it changed - just like the pause you'd make if you were pushing a clutch pedal. Sadly, people just didn't understand and I sold just one. To an old man. Who traded it in elsewhere 3 months later.

What would be wrong with a sequential with a clutch, like on a motorbike? I would think that should work ok?
You can't have everything - where would you put it?
