The thing to do is to run the math and see what the cost of operating the car is for, say, 5 years, vs. the cost of operating a Subaru. If it makes sense to get the Nissan I'd certainly not hesitate to do so.

these hybrids and electrics... the battery lifes scare me. I'd like to find out some real world numbers on the actual cost of 10 year ownership is on a hybrid or electric.

Also, the weight and power of these things scares the piss out of me. They handle poorly, brake poorly, and accelerate poorly. I honestly have avoided several accidents just based on my acceleration, braking and handling abilities.

Yes the cost of ownership is also crucial in my view as well.

My major current objection to the car are the "zero emission" graphics, that are IMO at least as kitsch as huge wings or unpainted carbon fiber panels on a Subaru. It'd be a nice looking city car if it didn't have the decals -- not as pretty as a Fiat 500 or a Citroen C1 IMO but still nice looking. I'd drive it if it were plain Jane.

Probably a couple years at this point. There are those derivatives made in Argentina but I've never seen one of those in person (and it's just as well, they're disastrous IMO). Have you seen the coffee shop scene in The Big Lebowski? I bet the dealer visible across the street (I could swear it's that one in mid-Wilshire just to the east of Beverly Hills) has one, they always seemed to have one.
