Question Stock Tranny Tough Enough to Drag?

Hey guys, just wondering if the stock tranny is suitable for 1/4 mile racing. Planning to take my '03 subie out there and I've read and heard bad things about it, so just wondering if i need to worry about upgrading before i take it to the track. Any input is appreciated.

I took mine to the track. No problems. But I wouldn't bracket race every week.

My 06 went fine too. Maybe if you wanted to only run your car once or twice you would be fine, but it's not something I would recommend.

Thank you for all the input. Another quick question, what gears would i need to replace? How much would it cost to replace them? My dad owns an auto repair shop so i could get the labor for somewhat cheap (assuming its too complicated for the average person?). Also is buying a sport clutch something to look into?

Get the gears & sport clutch at the same time. I've seen horror stories with some WRXs that have aftermarket clutches with the stock tranny. Look into RA gears.
If you're looking for a daily driver and maybe go to the track with it a couple times, I don't think you need to worry about the tranny & clutch, depending on mileage of course.

I would say its how you launch the car, if you rev to redline and drop the clutch you will be leaving your gears on the ground pretty soon. If you do it right and slip the clutch enough to get a good launch, then you should be fine for a while.

I drag race once or twice a month in my 03 wrx and this is my 2nd full season. So far so good, I am planning on doing an ra setup as well as a new clutch being that I will be 300awhp 300ftlbs give or take in a matter of 2 or 3 weeks

Don't launch it to hard and you should be ok. I have about 50 runs on my basically stock '03, and no problems so far.

Yeah just dont launch too hard. I use a quick slip method, its slipped quick enough where im not riding on the clutch but not fast enough to bog. When I dont smell clutch I know I did it right, which is useually alot of the time .

I wouldn't do it unless you'd be ok with breaking the transmission and can afford a new one. You might get away with it but there's always a chance something could break.
