    For 2014 the WRC classic has undergone a transformation. Out goes the previous rally hub in Valence, in comes a new service base in Sebastien Ogier’s hometown of Gap and a substantially modified route.

    The Monte has always featured an unusual format by WRC standards, and this year’s 82nd running is no exception. The recce runs between Saturday 11th and Monday 13th January and is followed, on Tuesday, by the traditional starting ceremony in Monte Carlo’s Place du Casino.

    Shakedown is on Wednesday 15th, on a road close to a new central service Park in Gap, with the competition proper getting underway on Thursday with a first loop of three stages run twice in the Haute Alpes region.

    Friday features Monte Classics like the 49.25 km Vitrolles - Col D'Espreaux - Faye , which is run twice, the 36.70km Sisteron - Col de Fontbelle - Thoard and a night running of Clumanc - Col du Défend - Lambruisse.

    That night competitors will head south to Monaco, from where Saturday’s final leg is based. The action comprises two loops of two stages in the hinterland of Nice - one by day and the other by night. The rally will end on Sunday 19th with the traditional awards ceremony on the square of the Prince's Palace in Monaco.

    Ogier tops shakedown times



    Reigning World Rally Champion, Sebastien Ogier, emerged fastest from this morning’s Rallye Monte-Carlo shakedown stage.

    The 30-year-old set a best time of 2m 15.3s in his VW Polo R WRC over the 3.52km test stage.

    Kris Meeke and Mads Ostberg got their first full season as Citroen drivers off to a flying start by sharing second place with a time that was 1.2s slower than Ogier’s benchmark.

    With the shakedown stage located in the village of Chateauvieux – six kilometres south of Ogier’s hometown of Gap – the Frenchman was on familiar ground. However, he wasn’t reading too much in to the results from shakedown.

    He said: “The weather today has been perfectly dry, but the road condition was changing a lot. Some of the other guys were maybe a little slow this morning but we will have to wait for the rally to see how quick people really are.

    “A lot of rain is expected tomorrow and the conditions will be very complicated. Starting first on the road at 7.30 in the morning in the dark will not be an easy job for us.”

    Meeke was pleased with his performance during shakedown, particularly as he didn’t think he was running on the most suitable Michelin rubber.

    “Everything feels good, so I can’t complain,” he said. “We were using the soft tyre rather than the super soft – which I believe was the correct choice for these conditions. Looking at my time, it seems to bode well for the rally. I’m feeling comfortable.”

    VW’s Jari-Matti Latvala was fourth quickest at shakedown in a time of 2m 18.2s, while Robert Kubica showed that he gathered a lot of useful experience during his hard-fought win on the recent Jännerrallye to go fifth fastest in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

    His time of 2m 18.3 was 0.1s faster than that of Thierry Neuville who was going up against the WRC stopwatch for the first time in his Hyundai i20 WRC.

    Day 1 - Monte Carlo - Mdday

    The opening morning of Rallye Monte-Carlo was packed with drama and threw up more than a few surprises.

    Although all of the crews have ice note teams that inspect the stages around two hours before the competition gets underway, they were all caught out by an unexpected amount of snow and ice on the opening 25km test.

    Like almost all of his rivals, reigning World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier was using super-soft slick tyres on SS1 and promptly crashed into a wall on the very first corner. It wasn’t a good start.

    Just behind him, Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville became the first retirement. He was 4.5s faster than Ogier at the first split time, but his excitement got the better of him and he crashed into a telegraph pole a couple of corners later. Damage to the rear of his i20 meant he was unable to continue.

    Robert Kubica ignored all the drama that was unfolding around him to set fastest times on both of the opening stages. Everyone knew the ex-F1 driver was fast, but the speed with which he got to grips with the unpredictable Monte conditions surprised many. His Ford Fiesta RS WRC was the car to beat.

    But on the final stage in the opening loop, the standings changed again. The catalyst was a lengthy section of snow part way through SS3. It was a disaster for those on slick tyres, but great news for those with a couple of snow tyres in the boot of their cars.

    Frenchman Bryan Bouffier fitted a snow tyre to one his car’s front corners and repeated the exercise on an opposite corner at the rear. That gave him just enough grip to set the fastest time on SS3 and move into the overall rally lead.

    Citroen’s Kris Meeke did the same and moved up in to second place, while Dani Sordo followed suit and leapt in to third overall.

    Kubica, who didn’t have the benefit of snow tyres, was unable to match the ultimate pace on SS3 and dropped to fourth place. Ford World Rally Team driver Elfyn Evans was second quickest on SS3 and moved up to fifth place overall, while Mads Ostberg’s Citroen finished the morning in sixth place.

    In the WRC2 category, Lorenzo Bertelli set the early pace in his Ford Fiesta R5 and led the way after the first couple of stages to hold a 37-second lead over Yurii Protasov heading into the third test.

    But the Italian dropped almost a minute on SS3 and promptly dropped down to second place, behind his Ukranian rival. Ireland’s Michael Barrable finished the morning in third place at the wheel of his Tunnocks World Rally Team Fiesta.

    In the WRC3 category, the sole entry of Gilbert Quentin remains on course for a maximum points score after making it to the opening loop of stages unscathed.

    The same loop of three stages would be re-run after lunch to complete Thursday’s first leg.

    End of Day 1 news:
    Bryan Bouffier continues to lead the Monte Carlo Rally, with Kris Meeke, Robert Kubica and Sebastien Ogier fighting for second at the end of leg one.

    After his muted start to his World Rally Championship title defence in the morning, Volkswagen driver Ogier won two of Thursday afternoon's three stages.

    He angled his tyre choices towards better conditions than his rivals, who all anticipated more snow.

    Heavy rainfall ultimately worked slightly to Ogier's advantage, although stage conditions were still very slushy.

    There was little to choose between M-Sport Ford drivers Bouffier and Kubica, and Citroen man Meeke, through the afternoon.

    Kubica jumped Meeke for second shortly after service, while Dani Sordo retired from this fight when his Hyundai refused to restart before SS5. He had got the new i20 up to third on its debut.

    But Kubica could not make any inroads on Bouffier's lead, and lost second to Meeke again on the final stage.

    The pair will start Friday 0.7 seconds apart, 39s adrift of Bouffier, with the flying Ogier just eight seconds behind them.

    Mads Ostberg is fifth in the second Citroen, having pulled clear of Kubica's team-mate Elfyn Evans, who remains sixth on his Monte debut.

    Finns Jari-Matti Latvala and Mikko Hirvonen have made their way up to seventh and eighth after struggling for pace and confidence in the morning.

    Latvala had languished as far back as 18th early on, but has recouped 40s of his previous three-minute deficit to the front.

    The defending world champion leapt into second place with a fastest time on the mammoth 49-kilometre opening stage, but Bouffier fought back on the next test to go fastest by 0.2s.

    It was enough to stop Ogier in his tracks. Bouffier said: “I am having to drive quite flat out and close to the edges. It’s a great battle with Seb and I’m doing my best.”

    Britain’s Kris Meeke was bumped down to third place following Ogier’s first stage charge but he was pleased with his morning’s work after successfully defended the place from day one sensation Robert Kubica just behind.

    Citroen’s Mads Ostberg and VW’s Jari-Matti Latvala hold fifth and sixth places respectively at the end of the morning, while M-Sport World Rally Team duo Elfyn Evans and Mikko Hirvonen occupy seventh and eighth places in their Ford Fiesta RS WRCs.

    There was drama in the WRC2 category as a brace of punctures forced the lead to change twice. Overnight pacesetter, Yurii Protasov picked up a puncture in SS7 and that handed the lead to Armin Kremer. But Kremer suffered an identical fate on the next test and that handed the lead back to a grateful Protasov.

    WRC Monte Carlo: Ogier leads into final day after commanding showing

    Sebastien Ogier goes into the final day of the Monte Carlo Rally with a 51-second lead after a commanding performance on Friday.

    Reigning world champion Ogier had languished in ninth place, 1m20s off the lead, three stages into the event following a poor tyre choice in Thursday morning's changeable conditions.

    His subsequent recovery charge got him up to fourth by the end of leg one and second halfway through Friday, but closing the 35s gap to leader Bryan Bouffier still looked difficult.

    However, a spin for Bouffier's M-Sport Ford on SS9 handed first place to Ogier's Volkswagen.

    Ogier's advantage ballooned on the final stage of leg two, where Bouffier had to drive with pace notes borrowed from Francois Delecour having somehow contrived to miss part of the course during the recce.

    With Robert Kubica crashing out on Friday afternoon, Citroen is holding secure third and fourth places with Kris Meeke and Mads Ostberg.

    Ogier's team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala raised his pace through Friday and by the end of the day was up to fifth place, having been as low as 19th as he struggled for confidence on leg one.

    M-Sport duo Elfyn Evans and Mikko Hirvonen were among those outpaced by Latvala during leg two, despite the VW driver picking up a puncture on SS9.

    VW's third driver Andreas Mikkelsen was poised to move into the top six when he lost four minutes with a mistake, leaving him back in eighth.

    The rally concludes with four more stages on Saturday afternoon and evening, ending around 10pm local time.

    Ogier on course for Monte win

    World Champion Sebastien Ogier has edged a step closer to victory on this year’s Rallye Monte-Carlo after a near-perfect day two performance.

    The VW driver, who was fighting back after a forgettable opening day, passed Bryan Bouffier for the lead on this morning’s third stage. The Frenchman made his rival’s job easier by sliding off the road and landing in a field.

    Ogier drew on his championship-winning experience to control the rest of the day and ended with a 51s advantage. “Today was much better than yesterday,” he said. “Tomorrow will be difficult with some snow expected on the Col de Turini. But for now I can be happy.”

    Kris Meeke put in another assured performance in his Citroen DS3 WRC to retain third place. His main threat at the start of the day came from ex-f1 star Robert Kubica. However, his rally came to an abrupt end 32km into SS9.

    “There was a sudden change of grip,” the Pole explained. “We needed to be cautious because we had it marked by our ice crew, but unfortunately I misjudged how big that change would be. We went into the corner, the front went straight on and we hit a bridge.”

    That took the pressure off Meeke and he carved out a 1m 10s lead over his team-mate Mads Ostberg at the final control.

    Jari-Matti Latvala edged past impressive M-Sport World Rally Team driver Elfyn Evans to claim fifth place on the final stage, while Mikko Hirvonen’s frustrating rally continued in seventh.

    VW’s Andreas Mikkelsen completed the top eight in his Polo R WRC. His progress was hindered when he slid off the road on SS10 and dropped more than four minutes.

    SS12: Ogier dominates in the wet


    Sebastien Ogier set the fastest time on the opening stage across the iconic Col de Turini. But he left it late.

    He trailed VW team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala by 4.1s after the final split, but pulled out an advantage of 0.3s at the finish line. It was the mark of a world champion. Only 0.5s covered Ogier, Latvala and Bryan Bouffier in the top-three places.

    All of the front-running drivers took studded winter tyres on the opening stage to cope with the snow that their weather crews had reported. But, the snow wasn’t as extensive as many feared and made the driving conditions challenging.

    Bryan Bouffier said: “When we went through the snow, it was not easy because there was mainly slush. There was maybe only about 500 metres of hard snow.”

    Citroen’s Kris Meeke was beaming after driving across the Col De Turini in a works DS3 for the first time. “I really enjoyed it in there,” he said. “This is just awesome. As young boy I grew up dreaming of days like this.”

    The battle for second place in WRC2 failed to materialise. Robert Barrable was expecting Lorenzo Bertelli to challenge him hard, but the Italian’s Ford Fiesta R5 lost the drive to its rear wheels at the start of the stage and he dropped 40s to his Tunnocks World Rally Team rival. That increased Barrable’s advantage in second place to a minute.

    SS13: Hirvonen makes progress

    Mikko Hirvonen breathed a huge sigh of relief as his fifth-fastest time was enough to finally edge him past his less experienced team-mate Elfyn Evans. The Finn took the place by two seconds.

    Evans couldn’t challenge because of a lack of confidence. He said: “I struggled to carry any speed. It’s no surprise that Mikko has come past.”

    Sebastien Ogier was fastest again, beating Kris Meeke by 3.5s. The VW ace was revelling in the heavy rain, but admitted he also had one eye on the second run through the stage, which will be used as the Power Stage. “We changed a couple of notes just in case we push for some more points on the power stage,” he joked.

    Even more drama in the WRC category as the head of the leaderboard in WRC2 changed once again. Lorenzo Bertelli overtook Robert Barrable to re-take second place. The Irishman had lost time with a windscreen that wouldn’t demist properly. “I couldn’t see the corners or the lines after one kilometer. It was horrible,” he said.

    SS14: Traffic jam chaos - cancelled !

    If anyone had hopes of attacking in SS14 were dashed when privateer Jaroslav Melicharek lost traction in the heavy snow, got stuck and blocked the road on the way up to the Col de Turini.

    Nobody running behind was able to get past and that caused a nasty and rather unhelpful traffic jam. Rally organisers had no alternative than to neutralise the stage and hand everyone a notional time to ensure nobody running behind gained an unfair advantage.

    Mikko Hirvonen faced an anxious journey to the final stage at Sospel after he discovered that his Ford Focus RS WRC had developed a suspected alternator failure on SS14. “It’s going to be a question of survival for us,” said the man who lay in sixth place as he made his way to the Power Stage.

    SS15: Ogier Wins Monte Carlo

    The drama on the 2014 Rallye Monte-Carlo went down to the wire. Here is a review of the headline-making events and incidents that shaped the final day:

    A second fastest time on the closing ‘Power Stage’ ensured that Sebastien Ogier won his first-ever Rallye Monte-Carlo as a World Rally Championship driver. He was 0.4s slower than team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala. That meant he only claimed two extra championship points, but he wasn’t too upset. “It’s been a tough weekend and I’m happy to finish. I wasn’t in the mood to take risks for three extra points,” he said. Kris Meeke claimed the final ‘Power Stage’ point.

    Mikko Hirvonen’s worst nightmare came true on the last test. His car continued to lose battery power on the road section to the stage and that meant he started late. He then grappled to keep his car moving on the 16-kilometre test, but all of his efforts were in vain. He was forced to stop and hand Elfyn Evans the sixth place that he’d worked hard to earn only two stages earlier.

    During a rally where it was almost impossible to predict who would win, Yurii Protasov crossed the finish line as the WRC2 winner. Lorenzo Bertelli was second in his Ford Fiesta R5, albeit more than seven minutes behind his rival, and Robert Barrable was third in his Tunnocks World Rally Team machine. He was a further minute and-a-half behind Bertelli.
