    First AutoX

I attended my first autocross last Saturday, and I'm already hooked. I can't believe I haven't been going to these for years!
I just joined SCCA and the AL region, bought my helmet and fixed up my car to pass tech. Now I just have to count down the days til the next one!

I went to my first event last weekend to watch and see how everything works, and it looked like fun. Does anyone have advice for a new guy wanting to try autocross? Do the cones leave any marks? My car is white just wondering if I should tape the impact spots, if so what tape is best?

Wide blue or green painters tape. The cones don't leave marks, unless they do. See what others are using, if anything, and decide if its worthwhile.

Depends on the cones I guess. I've murdered my fair share of cones and don't have any marks to prove it.

Most people just use blue painters tape, you can even make your numbers out of it.

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it, tell your friends yadayada. The more the better. It seems like not nearly as many Subarus autoX or race as there should be imo. At least compared to how many people modify em. I guess we all have our own reasons for doing so...

I've murdered many cones and never got anything on my car. Although I don't exactly take care of my front bumper so if it does leave marks I probably don't notice them. I see guys with nice Porsches and stuff taping up their front bumpers with painters tape. Should work alright.

Advice, pump your tires up pretty high so they don't roll over and ruin themselves after only a couple of events. You can use shoe polish to mark them and then let air out to see where the best pressure sits. If you have some serious rubber like dunlop star specs you prolly don't need to worry as much about that though.

Depends on the tires! Also, it depends on your camber settings. I recommend getting an alignment and trying to get as much negative camber up front as you can get if you want to autoX fairly often. -1.5 degrees I think is the max on the stock setup which should be a really nice improvement. -2 or more will be good if you do it a lot, but you will need some aftermarket parts to get there and you will start to notice it more on the street.

I have hankook V12s which are "summer tires" but they aren't that "extreme." The sidewalls are soft so the tire rolls over on its outside edge. These are good cheap tires though and they've held up to a bunch of runs, but they won't be competitive or anything. I run close to max in the rear which is 50psi. In the front I run slightly lower like 42-48. Now that I have more camber in the front I have been running 38-44 with good wear. What tires are you running? Use chalk or shoe polish to mark the tire and see how much pressure you need.

I just ran my first AutoX recently on street performance tires. I was advised to pump up my tires to near the maximum. Max in my case is 51 psi so I was advised to go to 48-49... and then slowly let air out each run. If you look on the side of the tire you can see how far it is folding over each run and there's a little indicator that shows how much fold you should have.
