Spencer Massey earned his fourth Top Fuel victory of the season to retake the points lead, outrunning Steve Torrence in the final of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio, on Sunday.
Massey's winning run of 3.916 seconds at 312.50 mph was better than that of Torrence, who finished in 3.894 seconds at 315.71 mph.
"I knew the final round was going to be huge," Massey said. "Steve was running awesome all day. He's been running awesome all season, actually. I'm from Texas, he's from Texas, and we both drove Top Alcohol Dragsters in Division 4. The weather here was even hot like it is in Texas."
Mike Neff topped the Funny Car field, and Vincent Nobile won in Pro Stock.
Neff, the first two-time Funny Car winner at Norwalk, raced to his second Funny Car win of the season, beating Tim Wilkerson in the final round. Neff drove his Ford Mustang to a 4.217-second run at 298.21 mph.
For the back-to-back Norwalk champion and three-time finalist as a crew chief, Neff has a good feeling about racing at Norwalk. He said he can't put his finger on why he does well here but he is glad to have the good luck.
“This place is kind of tricky. We have done fairly well on the hotter race tracks," Neff said. "Sometimes it just seems like you go to a track and you just always do well there. There are also just some tracks where it seems like you can never do anything right. I don't know how it all works but Norwalk has definitely been really good to me," Neff said.
“That was a great run in the final. It ended up being a good run in the second round even though it spun the tires. It still was right in there. You weren't going to run much better out there. The track was kind of slippery and that was about all it had.”
In Pro Stock, the 21-year-old Nobile edged Jason Line. Nobile won the $50,000 K&N Horsepower Challenge on Saturday. On Sunday, he added $25,000 for the race win and $25,000 for an NHRA Sweep Bonus.
