V6 turbo engine on Ferrari test bed | Planet F1 | Formula One | News, Standings, Results, Features, Video
Ferrari have stepped up their plans to be at the forefront when it comes to the new engine era with the team revealing they are running the 2014-spec power-unit at their factory.
Formula One will swap the current 2.4-litre V8 engine format to brand-new, 1.6-litre V6 turbos from the 2014 campaign and Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault as well as PURE are expected to be the only suppliers.
Luca Marmorini, Ferrari's engine and electronics director, says they have been running the new V6 on the dyno at their Maranello base.
"This is a very challenging period for our powertrain people," he told the official Ferrari website during a video interview.
"We are working on the 2012 powertrain and the rest of the season is very important. No-one has also mentioned that we need to work on the 2013 engine, which is a lot of work with a new installation.
"At the same time, we have the first V6 on the dyno and that is a very interesting project. The 2014 regulations are extremely challenging and there are completely new Formula 1 powertrain regulations, mostly focussed on energy recovery.
"Our V6 is running at the moment and we are running a lot of things. It is a turbo engine; we are really focussed on that and to interpreting the rules in the right way."
Now that was a surprising qualy. I really felt Kimi had it in him. But it a pleasant change. Congrats to Button, Kobayashi (what?) & Maldonado.

Some fantastic & very brave overtaking moves. Fantastic race start from Maldonado.I really didn't understand what that investigation after the race issue was for the "incident" involving MSC & Vettel.
Very happy for Jenson.
Wow. A race ban and €50k fine? I guess the stewards are penalizing him based on what could potentially have been a more serious incident. I think Grosjean has great potential in F1, but probably a little too eager to prove himself.
Maldonado admitted in an interview that his hand slipped off the clutch causing him to jump the start. Between that and causing yet another accident, he'll lose 10 grid spots next week. Well deserved. IMO that guy's had too many opportunities to correct his behavior. He needs to be ejected from F1. Everyone else manages to score points without making contact....
Regarding MSC and Vettel, I think the issue was how MSC fought so hard to retain position in the corners approaching his pit stop, then (dangerously, IMO) dove across Vettel to make the pit entrance. Wouldn't have been so serious if Vettel had also been heading there, but he had to react very quickly to avoid a collision.
He hit Santander's golden boy, so he gets a bigger penalty than all the times he took other guys out.
Fernando is lucky to have not been hurt.
Vettel WAS heading to the pit until Michael went for it so Vettel aborted his stop. He had instructions to do the opposite of whatever Michael did.
