RIP Dan Wheldon
Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after his car became ensnarled in a fiery 15-car pileup on Lap 13, flew over another vehicle and landed in a catch fence just outside turn 2.
The 33-year-old racer was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, including this year's race.
Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.
Weldon was airlifted from the track to University Medical Center; about two hours later, his colleagues were told of his death.
"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race."
In his honor, drivers took part in a five-lap salute around the oval.

Friends don't let friends drive Mitsubishis.
Finally got around to watching the video today and that's the most horrific multi-car crash I've ever seen.
Cars just started going up in massive fireballs and that black car got rocketed from the apron all the way up into the wall in a split second, launching itself right over other cars. Never seen anything like that before. Which car was Wheldon's?
EDIT: Just found out that black car was Wheldon. I can see why he died. He hit the wall closer to head-on than sideways, and he must have been doing about 175 still. He didn't have a chance to swerve at all either because his car was airborne pretty much until it hit the wall.

I met Dan a couple times...real genuine guy. I cried when they announced his passing during the race. My condolences to the Wheldon family.
I just read that the 2012 Indy Car will be named after Dan (he was the guy doing the testing of the car).
I just don't know what to say. I don't have the words.
I have never met Dan, but have heard many stories about how great he was as a person. I watch the crash and just nod my head in disbelief. I am so sorry that things like this have to happen.
I am so sorry and feel for the families and friends.
