The second worst part of the Formula One season is right now during the summer break when F1 fans have to endure four weeks of no racing.

We've made it this far and have but a week to go until racing resumes at Spa, so to get us over the hump, we have the help of Breakdown Cover. The website has compiled thirty of the best on-track battles dating all the way to Tazio Nuvolari's Alfa Romeo beating a passel of Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows in Germany in 1935 and put them all into one place.

We've dropped one of our favorites after the jump, Ayrton Senna's first lap antics at Donington Park back in 1993.

Mark Webber tops final practice for Red Bull Racing at Spa

Mark Webber topped the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, although there was a brief scare for team-mate Sebastian Vettel when he ground to a halt in the pit entry during the session.

As was the case during both practice sessions yesterday, rain played a part in proceedings as a heavy shower hit the circuit towards the end of the hour-long session which prevented drivers from setting quick laps late on.

With the session starting damp, it took time for the drivers to start setting quick laps with a number of different people taking their turn at the top of the times.

Webber posted the quickest time with a lap of 1min 46.106secs - which was easily the best time of the weekend and ended up just over a tenth of a second clear of Lewis Hamilton in second place.

Webber's Red Bull team-mate Vettel ended the session with the third quickest time, but only after his session was brought to a premature conclusion when he ground to a halt on the entry to the pits with his car stuck in gear.

Vettel was pushed back to the garage by marshals before Red Bull was able to look into the issue, which the team linked to an air box problem that saw him told to cut the engine. While the engine was restarted in the garage, worsening conditions meant he didn't take to the circuit again.

Jenson Button was fourth quickest in the second McLaren, with Robert Kubica and Friday pace-setter Fernando Alonso rounding out the top six.

Elsewhere, Mercedes struggled down in 14th and 15th places with Michael Schumacher just ahead of Nico Rosberg. Schumacher was one of the few drivers who elected to go out on wet rubber towards the end of the session.

Of the newcomers, Jarno Trulli was quickest in 19th place but was more than two seconds behind Tonio Liuzzi's Force India. Encouragingly for Hispania Racing, Bruno Senna was second quickest but some six-tenths down on Trulli.

Mark Webber survived a flurry of late laps to claim Red Bull Racing's twelfth pole in 13 grands prix this season, taking fastest time in qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps.

The championship leader, 34 on Friday, bounced back from an apparently disappointing earlier qualifying session to seize top spot midway through the final ten-minute shoot-out, but then had to wait to see if rivals from McLaren, Ferrari and within Red Bull could displace him.

With Fernando Alonso failing to improve on an initial tenth place after struggling with his Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel could only consolidate as the first fresh raindrops began to fall on the Ardennes, but McLaren managed to find time, with both Jenson Button, to fifth, and Lewis Hamilton, to second, improving. Hamilton's move pushed the impressive Robert Kubica off the front row, but was not enough to dislodge Webber, whose 1min 45.778secs lap proved to be 0.09secs too good for the Briton.

Vettel will line up alongside Kubica on row two, with Button and Felipe Massa sharing row three. Williams driver, and the 300 Club's only member, Rubens Barrichello will start seventh, with Force India's Adrian Sutil alongside, as Nico Hulkenberg partners Alonso in ninth and tenth.

Two years on from losing victory in the Belgian Grand Prix in controversial circumstances, Lewis Hamilton dominated the 2010 event to thrust himself back into world title contention.

The Briton made the most of a poor start from polesitter, and points leader, Mark Webber to lead from lights to flag at Spa-Francorchamps, surviving two rain interruptions and a trip through the gravel at Rivage to claim a third win of the season and the first for McLaren with its blown diffuser system.

More importantly, perhaps, three of Hamilton's title rivals failed to score and, while Webber bounced back to secure second, Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel, McLaren's Jenson Button and Ferrari number one Fernando Alonso all went home empty handed. The revised scoring system introduced for this season, with its increased margin between first and second, allows Hamilton to return to the head of the championship standings, now leading Webber by three points 182-179, with third-placed Vettel, who endured a ragged race, 31 marks adrift.

The race started badly for Webber who, having admitted that victory would not be determined on lap one, pretty much had his words thrown back in his face. As his RB6 lapsed into anti-stall when the lights went out, Hamilton, third-placed Robert Kubica, Vettel and Jenson Button all took advantage. Such was the world champion's start from fifth on the grid, he very nearly made it a McLaren 1-2 at La Source, and wasted little time in achieving his aim.

Having fended off the eager Vettel at La Source second time around, the pair swapping places, Button blasted back to deprive a fish-tailing Kubica of second exiting Eau Rouge, while the Red Bull took to the grass in his efforts to follow the Briton through. The conditions, however, had taken an early turn for the worst, with a rain shower causing mayhem at the Bus Stop chicane.

    Good race, lots have happened!

Hamilton spanks the field, Webber had a bad start. Cubica strong race for Renault, Rubihno well this was his 300th race but retired, Vettel well he is still a damn rookie with a fast car and a good team behind him, but like this he wont become a world champion. Schummy has a bone to pick with his team mate Rosberg! Awesome spin of Trulli hehehe

    Oh yeah, the rain!

Not the best day for Ferrari, an exciting race though.

I don't think Vettel should have received a drive through penalty, it is getting ridiculous now every time someone makes contact they get a penalty.

Austin's F1 track gets laid out

Here it is. Race promoter Tavo Hellmund has pulled back the sheets on the Austin formula one track, and the course looks damn impressive at first glance. The 3.4-mile course packs in 20 turns, a total change in elevation to 133 feet and a back straight that's a full three-quarters of a mile long. What's more, the circuit is designed to promote passing for American fans with short attention spans thanks to plenty of long straights followed by tight, 45-degree turns. Hellmund said that the cars should be able to click off a 200 mph top speed, and will sail by the grand stands at 180 mph or more.

Interestingly enough, the course's designers have borrowed heavily from other tracks from around the world. Turns 3-6 are nearly carbon copies of a series of apexes at Silverstone, while 12-15 pay homage to Hockenheim. One section that's guaranteed to generate plenty of action is turns 16-18, a multi-apex monster cut from the same cloth as Istanbul's turn 8.

The Austin F1 course is slated to bare its first race by 2012, and there's some word that construction will get under way this December.

Jordan: Ferrari must pay for treating us 'like muppets'

Whilst BBC pundit Eddie Jordan contends Ferrari 'must pay the penalty' for the 'blatant' lack of respect it showed fans at Hockenheim, former F1 World Champion Damon Hill has urged the FIA not to 'throw the book' at the Scuderia over the team orders controversy

Ahead of today's potentially pivotal FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) hearing into the Ferrari Hockenheim team orders furore, opinion is divided amongst the sport's experts as to what F1's governing body should do – with Eddie Jordan insisting the team 'must pay' for having treated the public 'like muppets', and Damon Hill conversely arguing that a hefty punishment would not 'fit this particular crime'.

Should the FIA come down hard on Ferrari and drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa – whose orchestrated switch of positions during the closing stages of the 2010 German Grand Prix in July was the catalyst for the whole team orders controversy to rear its ugly head again, following its official ban back in 2002 – it could well spell the end of the former's title challenge this year, particularly if the Spaniard is stripped of the points he gained for his engineered 'victory', which would leave him a full 66 markers adrift of the world championship lead with just six races left to run. Jordan reckons that would be no less than both driver and team deserve.

“It was very blatant,” the former team owner-turned-BBC F1 pundit told BBC Radio Five Live. “I think they should get a bigger penalty. What happens if Alonso gets away scot-free and goes on to win [the title] by two points from whoever? What Ferrari did was they showed no respect to the public, they treated us all like muppets, they broke the rules and they have to pay the penalty.”

The Maranello-based outfit was fined $100,000 in the immediate aftermath of the race for the coded message given out by Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley, who twice informed the Brazilian over the pit-to-car radio that the following Alonso was faster than him – the clear inference being that he should move aside and let his team-mate through to take maximum points, in the light of their respective championship chances. Smedley later thanked Massa for having been so 'magnanimous'.

FIA decides against new team for 2011

The FIA has announced that none of the organisations bidding to become Formula 1's 13th team in 2011 have met its requirements, and that the grid will therefore stay at 24 cars.

The governing body had invited applications from parties interested in filling the slot left vacant by the collapse of the US F1 project on the eve of the 2010 season.

Several teams put in applications, including a partnership between former world champion Jacques Villeneuve and Italian ex-GP2 team Durango, plus a new bid from rejected 2009 applicant Epsilon Euskadi.

But the FIA World Motor Sport Council decided in a meeting today that none of the applicants were suitable.

"Following the press release of 19 March 2010 calling for expressions of interest to participate in the 2011 and 2012 seasons of the FIA Formula One World Championship, a number of interested parties expressed their interest," said an FIA statement.

"It was considered that none of the candidates met the requirements to be granted an entry into the championship.

"Consequently, the allocation of the 13th team will not be granted."

A number of candidates for the entry withdrew their applications during the process, including multiple GP2 and Formula 3 champion squad ART and new American organisation Cypher Group.

Others considered to be potential F1 entrants declined to participate, including Prodrive and Lola, both of which had made attempts to join the world championship in previous years.

The three outfits that entered F1 as part of last year's new team application processes - Hispania, Lotus and Virgin - have all yet to score or to regularly threaten the established midfield squads.

    FIA unveils 20-race 2011 F1 schedule

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council has released the provisional race calendar for the 2011 Formula 1 season, which sees Interlagos regain the season finale for the first time since 2008.

The enlarged 20-race calendar - the longest in F1 history - features an earlier start and later finish than the 2010 season, with the championship-closing Brazilian Grand Prix on 27 November. Abu Dhabi moves to the penultimate slot, having taken the season finale position for 2009/10.

There are four back-to-back races compared to three this season, including Malaysia-China, Spain-Monaco, Germany-Hungary and Japan-Korea.

The new Indian Grand Prix at Delhi comes towards the end of the season as part of a series of flyaway races.
