Cool WRC Spain - Catalunya Oct 1-4 talk/results spoiler*

    Next Round 11

WRC Spain - Rallye de Espana - Catalunya - October 1-4

    Official Website:
    rallyracc.com/2009/

The entry list is now complete ahead of the World Rally Championship's penultimate round of the year at Rally Spain. 80 crews representing 28 different countries have signed up for the event situated on Catalonia's Costa Daurada.

The event's 45th edition will be based in Salou from October 1st to 4th, with rally headquarters next to the Port Aventura park.

Following the Citroen camp's post-rally penalty in Australia, victory shifted from Sebastien Loeb to Mikko Hirvonen and gave the Finn a five-point advantage in the drivers' standings. The Spanish round will therefore be crucial in conquering the 2009 crown.

The situation also means that a number of Citroen C4 WRCs and Ford Focus RS WRCs could very well play an important part in the title fight, and all five teams participating in the World Rally Championship will have at least two cars defending their interests in Spain.

Citroen Total team leader Sebastien Loeb got his quest for a fifth consecutive Rally de Espana victory off to a good start today by going fastest at this morning's pre-event Shakedown.
The four-hour test took place on the opening 4.32kms of the Riudecanyes stage, which will be run twice on Sunday as SS13 and SS16. Weather conditions were dry and bright throughout the session, with a peak temperature of 26 degrees Celsius.
Loeb made four passes through the stage in his C4 WRC, setting his quickest time of 2min 36.4sec on his final attempt. Returning to the service area the Frenchman declared himself satisfied with the set-up of his car, but said the test had been only of limited use as preparation for the main event.
"Like most drivers we wanted to save our hard compound tyres for the rally, so we used our soft compound ones for Shakedown - even though they weren't the ideal choice," explained Loeb. "It was hard to gauge a feeling in the car, but we weren't trying to find a different set-up. If the weather stays good I'm not sure we'll use the soft tyres, so what we are doing today is not so important. We did a few runs and checked the differential settings a bit but mainly it was about getting the confidence that everything on the car works okay."

    Day 2

Dani Sordo continues to lead the way on Rally de Espana after the second morning, having retained a slender advantage over Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb through the first three stages of the day.

Sordo went into the second day with a narrow advantage over the defending champion but saw the Frenchman go quickest on SS7 to put the pair level at the head of the standings. Loeb then took the lead on SS8 only for Sordo to go quicker on SS9 to take an advantage of less than a second to the mid-day service.

“It feels good now - I can attack more," he said. "It's close with Sebastien, but I think he has more to give, when I'm almost on the limit. On this stage there was a lot of grip on the surface and that meant there wasn't so much understeer. I'm enjoying it."

Loeb himself admitted it has been an 'interesting' morning but extended his advantage over title rival Mikko Hirvonen, who lost further time to the Citroen duo to drop to 44.6secs behind the leader, while Petter Solberg and Sebastien Ogier hold fourth and fifth – the latter having gone quickest on the second stage of the day.

    End of Day 2

Sebastien Loeb will lead into the final day of Rally de Espana after another day dominated by Citroen in Catalunya.

Loeb briefly took the lead during the morning loop before team-mate Dani Sordo edged back ahead prior to the mid-day service, with the Spaniard retaining his lead through the opening two stages of the afternoon. However, on the final test of the day, the Spaniard slowed to allow Loeb through into the lead and he will take an advantage of 1.5secs into the final day of the event.

I'm in the lead, but not by a lot," he said. "The main thing is we got through the day okay and with no punctures. I'm very happy to be in the lead but there's a long day still to come tomorrow. We'll see how we do."

With Sordo set to play the team game on the final day, Citroen are poised to secure the manufacturers' title, while Loeb is well placed to close the gap to Mikko Hirvonen to just a point in the drivers' standings.

As was the case on the opening day, Hirvonen was unable to keep pace with the Citroen pair ahead but remains in third place, although he is now nearly 50 seconds down on the leader.

    End of Day 3

Congratulations to Citroen on winning the 2009 Manufacturers Title

Sebastien Loeb cruised through the final stage of the Rally de Espana today to take victory in his Citroen C4 WRC and ensure his fight for a sixth World Rally Championship title will go to the final, decisive round in Great Britain later this month.
The result was Loeb's fifth consecutive win on the all-asphalt Spanish round of the series, the 53rd of his remarkable WRC career and his sixth this season.
Loeb's Spanish team-mate Dani Sordo was second, 12.0sec adrift, to complete a perfect one-two finish for the Citroen Total World Rally Team - enough to guarantee the French firm the 2009 FIA WRC title for Manufacturers with one round to go.
