4th Round: WRC Portugal April 2-5,2009

Also a round of the JWRC and PWRC.

    Official Website: Rally Portugal

After visiting Cyprus during its previous round, the WRC contenders will head to southernmost Portugal for the fourth event of the season. The gravel-based Rally Portugal, which was an IRC destination last year, switches back to the WRC calendar in 2009.

Beginning with an Algarve Stadium super special stage on Thursday 2 April – a site which will also serve as the rally's headquarters and service park - the action will afterwards resume the following morning with the first of three days appearing on the programme.

On Friday, the competitors face 429.19 kilometres of which 136.21km are timed across a double loop of three stages. Saturday's two loops of three stages count nearly 470km in all, with 145.18km run against the clock.

Sunday will offer two more routes to be completed twice, representing nearly 80km, before Rally Portugal is completed by another super special stage at the Algarve Stadium.

Gosh! Darnit! The site won't let me open the entry list PDF. Anyway, hopefully another podium for Petter. I guess it was the car after all.

NEWSFLASH: Latvala crashes out of lead
Jari-Matti Latvala's start to the 2009 World Rally Championship has continued to go from bad to worse after he crashed out of the Rally Portugal lead.

The Finn had stretched his lead over Dani Sordo to ten seconds with victory on stages two and three, but is reported to have rolled off the road following the second split on the Malhao stage.

Although there was reportedly confusion as to whether the stage would continue, the drivers will reach the midday service park unhindered.

His demise leaves Sordo in the lead of the rally, from Marcus Gronholm, Mikko Hirvonen and the recovering Sebastien Loeb.

    Exclamation

Jari-Matti Latvala's place in the BP Ford Abu Dhabi Team is to be 'reviewed' after he suffered his third crash in four World Rally Championship events in Portugal.

The Finn had opened up a ten second lead after the first three stages of the rally, but crashed heavily on SS4 through Malhao when he braked too late for a tight corner, clipped a bank and was sent over the crash barriers.

Rolling several times before coming to rest, although Latvala says it was the biggest accident of his career, both he and co-driver Mikko Anttila escaped unhurt.

However, having also crashed out of good positions in Ireland and Cyprus, Latvala faces bigger problems behind the scenes after the team admitted they are going to review whether or not to retain him for the immediate future.

It is a situation Latvala, who turns 24 today, is not surprised to be in, admitting his performances have not been good enough.

“The crash happened after a blind crest, when I should have been braking for a slow corner that followed,” Latvala told the WRC website. “But it seems I have a little problem in that I want to brake only when I see I have to. So instead I went too fast, hit a bank, went over a barrier and that was that. That where my problem is.

“It's not an easy situation. I know that I have been giving the team a frustrating time. They want to get good results, and want to take the fight to Citroen, and I want that too, but I have had too many crashes and that's made it difficult. Malcolm is thinking what he will do next but the future is a little bit open now.”

Indeed, team boss Malcolm Wilson admits Latvala's position in the team is in doubt now, but added he will only make a decision until after the weekend is over.
