    Latvala's crash: YouTube - RALLY PORTUGAL 2009 - Jari-Matti Latvala spectacular crash

    Day 2

    News Update:
Jari-Matti Latvala will drive for BP Ford Abu Dhabi on the next round of the World Rally Championship in Argentina after more details about his huge accident in Portugal came to light.

The Finn was leading heading into SS4 but a misjudged corner saw him clip a bank and be catapulted over the crash barrier, where he subsequently barrel-rolled down a hill more than a dozen times. Latvala went on to describe it as the biggest accident of his career.

A third crash in four rallies for Latvala, initially team manager Malcolm Wilson admitted his position at Ford would be 'reviewed', but after viewing footage of the spectacular accident, he has decided to give his driver a stay of execution for the next round.

Praising the strength and safety of the Focus RS WRC, Wilson insists he has '100 per cent confidence' in Latvala.

NEWSFLASH: Gronholm, Ogier stop on stage

Marcus Gronholm's hopes of a fairytale return to the World Rally Championship has come to an end after he was forced to stop on the first of the day's stages in Portugal.

The Finn was running a strong fourth in the Prodrive Subaru, but he is reported to have terminally damaged his car through the second split of the Santa Clara stage.

Although Gronholm got going again, he had lost more than a minute with his problem before he stopped for good.

Gronholm wasn't the only driver to hit problems either, with sixth place Sebastien Ogier also getting no further than split two.

Their problems mean Petter Solberg is up to fourth, Matthew Wilson is fifth, Evgeny Novikov is sixth, while Henning Solberg and Mads Ostberg now round out the top eight.

Gronholm had an off and damaged his Prodrive Subaru Impreza's radiator. He returned to the road about a minute later at a slower speed, but the engine temperature went up, the oil pressure went down, and Gronholm was forced to stop. It is unknown at present if he will return to the competition tomorrow but his fourth overall position is evidently lost.

Meanwhile, Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier stopped on this stage, reportedly with serious damage to his C4 WRC's steering system. The Frenchman got moving again after several minutes but stopped shortly thereafter

Gronholm’s crash in his own words from WRC.com

Back at the Prodrive service area after retiring earlier today, Marcus Gronholm told wrc.com exactly what had caused his crash:

“Okay, at the beginning of the stage I was maybe a little bit excited to go fast and try to do a good time,” he explained. “I went a little bit wide in a left-hander and hit a tree with the back of the car. We went off the road, rolled over once, and landed back on our wheels. I started the engine, got back on the road and did maybe 5kms before we started to have problems with overheating and had to stop.

“I don’t know how bad the damage is. We’ll see when the car gets back here. My only concern is the engine. Otherwise I think it’s possible to fix if we want to start again tomorrow,” he added.

After 18 months away from the sport, Gronholm put his accident down to being too ambitious too soon.

“I’ve not been rallying for a long time so starting behind Seb and trying to do the same times, hey, it’s not that easy!” he said. “Sure, we were on the pace yesterday but returning to the WRC so suddenly, and with a new car, it doesn’t all come together immediately. I made a small mistake, that’s it.”

Gronholm wouldn’t be drawn on whether or not he would return for further WRC outings this season. “It’s been okay here, it was quite nice up to this morning, but as for more rallies, well, you never know. We will see.”
