Gee, all Chris has to do is pass Loeb and he'll be in 3rd!...I know-I-know...Well lets just see if he can hold onto 4th. It did look promising for a while at least.

Petter Solberg has apologised to Subaru's fans after he crashed out in the final 'proper' test on day two of the Rally Japan, the squad's home round in the World Rally Championship.

'Hollywood', who said prior to the event that he was hoping to be able to challenge for the victory, was pushing to try and close the 20-odd second deficit to Sebastien Loeb in third place, when he slid wide in a left hander in SS18 - the 9.55 kilometre Kina 2 test - and spun his Impreza WRC 2008. The car suffered heavy right rear damage in the incident and he was thus forced to call it a day.

It is thought that he will be able to re-join the fold on Sunday under the SupeRally, although he now lies down in 13th place and stands little chance of scoring points.

"Of course it is disappointing and I must say sorry to the Subaru fans, but we have had some very good things from today," Petter reflected, trying to put a positive spin on the situation.

"We came round a left hander on stage 18 and hit a large hole and the car just spun around. I went to start again but the rear geometry was all broken. We were pushing hard and sometimes things like this happen.

"It's disappointing, but honestly it has been a very good day. It was really good fun to drive and I really enjoyed it, and to win a stage [SS12] is very good.

"We are definitely going in the right direction. We must look at the positives as there has been a lot good about today."

    Chris Atkinson [Subaru WRT]:

"Today was ok; we started ahead of Petter but he was a little quicker and got in front. But then he had his accident which is unlucky for the team and the Subaru fans as we were both in good positions and you never know what could happen on this rally. In stage 18, when Petter went off it left a big hole in the ground and we hit it as well and spun round. We damaged our suspension a little bit, but ok we could drive still, but not flat out. I think we are too far behind to push for third tomorrow so the main aim is to keep our position."

Francois Duval's co-driver Patrick Pivato is in a 'stable' but 'critical condition' following surgery on Friday night, the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team has confirmed.

Pivato suffered a fractured pelvis and fractured tibia on day one of the Rally Japan when he and Duval crashed out 4.8 kilometres into SS6 - the 11.10 kilometre-run through Yuparo 2.

Once he was freed from the wreckage, Pivato was airlifted to Higashi Tokushukai hospital in Sapporo, however, during surgery, some internal bleeding was discovered and the Frenchman was placed into intensive care. Since then he has made 'steady improvement', although he remains 'critical'.

The full statement from the Stobart squad read:

"Last night Patrick Pivato, co-driver to François Duval, underwent surgery to repair a fractured right pelvis and tibia after a high speed accident on stage 6 of Rally Japan yesterday.

"During the operation some internal bleeding was discovered and the Frenchman was swiftly re-operated on by surgeons at Higashi Tokushukai hospital and placed in intensive care.

"The operation to halt the internal bleeding concluded at 01:00 this morning and since then Pivato has made steady improvements over the course of the morning however still remains in a stable but critical condition. Progress reports on Pivato will be issued when available.

"No further comment will be made by the team at this time."

    Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena - 5th WRC Crown !

Citroen team leader Sebastien Loeb survived the atrocious conditions on day three of the Pioneer Rally Japan to take the final spot on the podium and clinch his fifth drivers' championship crown.
(Loeb has now scored 112 points and with Mikko Hirvonen ten points behind he cannot be caught (i.e. if Seb failed to score in Wales and his Finnish rival took the maximum haul, the Frenchman would still be crowned as he has taken more wins this season).

Loeb, who went into the 14th and penultimate round in the World Rally Championship having won the last five events in succession, elected not to try and push for the win in Sapporo, but rather do enough to ensure the battle with title rival Mikko Hirvonen didn't go to the finale in Wales.

His tactics paid off too and while he did have a scare in the penultimate stage, when he spun 200 metres from the end of the 27.76 kilometre-run through Sikot 2, he was still sixth quickest and eventually took third - and those vital six points - with ease, more than a minute up on Chris Atkinson in fourth.

Loeb now becomes the only driver in the 30-odd year history of the sport to have won the WRC crown five times - one more than Tommi Makinen and Juha Kankkunen, who both took it on four occasions.

"It's incredible [to win the title again]," said Seb. "It could'nt have been trickier today, but now is a great moment. There is no pressure. It's a big relief for me and also a big satisfaction to be a five-time world champion with Daniel [Elena - my co-driver]. We are very happy."

Congrats to Loeb...again. I'm getting tired of typing that every year. But he's proven he is the best driver out there. There is part of me that would like to see how well he'd do driving something other than a Citroen though.
