    Cool WRC Acropolis(Greece) May30-June1 talk/results spoiler*

One of the longest-standing events on the calendar, Acropolis has long been regarded as the season’s toughest event. Sitting well into European summertime, the gravel routes surrounding the ancient city of Athens will be notoriously hot and punishing on crews and cars alike.

The Subaru World Rally Team have entered two all-new Impreza WRC2008s for the Acropolis Rally. Petter Solberg / Phil Mills will drive car number five and Chris Atkinson / Stéphane Prévot will be aboard number six. Solberg and Mills finished third on this event last year, and 2008 will be Atkinson’s fourth running. His highest finish was sixth last year, alongside Prévot.

    Driver quotes
Petter Solberg: “We finished third here last year and this time we have the new car, so I’ll be really pushing for a strong result. It’s a very difficult event; very rocky and hot, and the stages have always been very rough so it’s hard on us and the cars. We’ve had a few days in the new car now, so I have a good feeling from it and really hope that we’ll be in a good position to fight at the front. I’ll be at 110 per cent, definitely.”

Chris Atkinson: “It’s the first time out in a new car so it’s very exciting but you’re always a little cautious! If the feeling’s good I’ll be pushing straight away. There’s no reason not to, and obviously I’m looking forward to the opportunity to see where we are with the car. We know it’s going to be a very tough event as there are so many variables, so it won’t be easy but I hope we can take another step in the right direction and start to close up to the frontrunners.”

I guess we'll find out if it was the car, or the driver, that was the cause of the contined lackluster performance leading up to this rally. (I'm hoping it was the car and that the new one is better than the C4 driven by a certain Frenchman). Good Luck Subaru!

The Acropolis of today is a spectator-friendly, sponsor-friendly "sprint" event compared to the multi-day, multi-night ordeal that traveled to much greater distances from Athens, but it is still a complete tank buster and if the new car can survive or even win here, it can do the same anywhere -- even in Kenya.

For the 55th running of the event, ELPA have announced a few changes:

SS Psatha is shortened by less than 400 m to 17,04 km.

SS Aulona (incidentally, the town Aulona is the site of actual tank proving grounds used by the Hellenic Armed Forces, but that's another story...) is shortened by almost 5 km, to 15, 14 km.

SS Asopia is lengthened and an amended road book is issued. The new, longer length is 18,52 km and bypasses a serious rock slide that occurred in the middle of the old route.

Although today will be cloudy in and around Athens, the weather service predicts temperatures in the 30s for the next few days, meaning temperatures inside the cabins can reach the mid-40s. Drivers have in the past requested to drive in shorts and T-shirts (this was before the climate control measures in top cars -- amateurs are still sweating it out to this day anyway).

So there you have it. Heat, more heat, tough stages, and so on. Keep in mind that many of the stages that are still considered "rough" are in fact well maintained and some are actually passed over with a bulldozer-grader, meaning there are few or no rocks along their length (I guarantee this, I've mountain biked some of them). They still wreck cars and demolish chassis despite being "smooth" though.

EDIT: I could swear I've seen huge crowds at Psatha even at 0700 on a "working day" Friday but it's been so long since I've attended. Attendance is expected to be quite strong this year anyway, with a re-vamped super stage and ceremonial start/finish plus relatively accessible special stage locations all within 1 hr's drive and 1 hr's hike from the car to a decent spot, max.

Official polo shirts, T-shirts, hats, lanyards etc. available here; note that US orders are not subject to VAT (but also keep in mind the USD is basically worthless so the exchange rate is going to be murder anyway, VAT or not):

Performance Clothing - High Perormance clothing and accessories.

I'm eyeballing the blue polo myself (though naturally I look terrific in anything). I've only ordered through these guys once before so can't vouch for their customer service.

    Previous Winners:

The list of cars that have won the Acropolis is almost a who's who of famous sporting machines. Previous winners have driven the Jaguar XK120, the Merc 300SL, the Ferrari 250 GT, the Lotus Cortina, the Porsche 911, the Ford Escort RS, the Audi Quattro... even a Chevrolet! The winners have piloted a Subaru five times, starting with Carlos Sainz's win in 1994.

Shakedown recce stages have been completed as of today, with P1 and P2 crews making two passes each on four stages.

Hirvonen's comments, that Aghioi Theodoroi is very rocky and tougher than last year, leaves me a bit perplexed actually as I feel Aghioi Theodoroi is an airfield in comparison to the average country "road" IMO, not the mention the agricultural trails cut using EEC money in the 80s etc. If ELPA really wanted to they could organize a rally that'd break absolutely everyone; instead, they've mixed it up a bit and sacrificed some tough stages for graded, softer stages across terrific countryside. It could, and has in fact, been much worse.

In any case, Messrs. Loeb, Atkinson, H. Solberg, Galli, P. Solberg et al. agree with Hirvonen (!). Everybody's worried about tyre wear and failures, with Villagra saying things are easier in Sardinia and Galli contemplating the balance between speed and protecting the car. Andersson also shared the view about Acropolis vs. Sardinia, Aava said the stages were tough but pretty, and Gardemeister expects plenty of punctures.

EDIT: Ford and/or Prodrive fans will no doubt like to hear that Dave Richards has won the Acropolis twice, in 1980 and 1981, with Ari Vatanen in a Ford Escort.

Citroen's Daniel Sordo was quickest in the shakedown for the Acropolis Rally of Greece on Thursday morning, the seventh round in the 2008 FIA World Rally Championship.

Sordo completed the 3.44 kilometre test stage, situated 5.27km north of the service park, in 2 minutes 26.3 seconds.

Further down the order Jari-Matti Latvala and Federico Villagra were joint seventh, although the former went off on his second pass and hit a tree.

Driver quotes from service A (after SS3)
    30 May 2008

Subaru's new Impreza off to a dusty debut in Greece
    Impreza WRC2008 #5
Petter Solberg: “Well it was not bad at all this morning. Things worked well and we didn’t have any problems at all. It’s good and I am very happy so far. We’re pushing hard but it’s quite early and we’ll just do little bits as we go to try and get it just right. It’s very important for us to be at this service with no problems. The car worked very well and I am happy. I am enjoying my new car so it is really good fun.”

    Impreza WRC2008 #6
Chris Atkinson: “We had no major problems this morning with the new car which is really good. We had a good clean run but ok, our road position didn’t help and we’re not quite there yet. Considering how rough stage three is, we got through there no problem and the car is running well. We’ll find more speed when the whole package is working well for sure, but at the moment we will make changes here and there to get that and just keep pushing.”

Looks like Loeb is positioning himself to strike during the 2nd phase, he's come out strong. I'd like to see Aris Vovos in the top 10 this year and hope his car stays together, he can do it. Solberg seems to be losing 1 sec per km or so, and he's right, that's not bad.

The real miracle drive so far is by Hirvonen, since he's on the stages first -- the worst place to be. He's spent his time cleaning up the stages for everyone else behind him and yet he's still 4rth.

Acropolis victims so far include Gigi Galli (suspension) and Mads Ostberg (front differential) as posted above, but I can't find any comments by either of them -- they've probably gone to the beach or something. Day 1 was concluded at 18:30 when the super special stage took place at the Hellenic Air Force's aerodrome facilities in Tatoi -- the same airfield that hosted the 1975 staging area for the Acropolis and numerous road race circuits in the 70s also.

Aris Vovos dropped another 20 sec. Argh! He's moving in the wrong direction. If the Suzukis stay together he'll have a tough time making top 10. The two works Subarus have dropped 10 sec or so each, and again that's not bad. At the very least, on its first outing, the new car is certainly no "worse" than the old car. I'm hoping they'll get lots of info and get it sorted and be able to challenge for podium ASAP.
