    Flash Report from Crash.net:
Subaru number two driver Chris Atkinson has retired from day two of the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

Atkinson, who had begun the leg in eighth, set the fourth best time in the opening test of the day. However his car refused to start before SS9, the 16.60 kilometre-run through Pissia, due to an electrical issue. (what a pisser!) pun intended!

It is not yet known if he will be able to rejoin the fold under the SupeRally format on Sunday.

Atkinson is the second 'works' retirement, as Munchi's Ford 'guest' driver Aris Vovos also went out this morning. The local star was sidelined after SS8 with steering problems. He had been running twelfth overall.

    More to follow later...

Subaru number two driver Chris Atkinson was 'annoyed' to be sidelined by a small technical problem on day two of the Acropolis Rally of Greece.

Atkinson, who began the leg eighth place overall in the new Impreza WRC2008, which is making its debut on the seventh round in the World Rally Championship, was fourth fastest in the opening test this morning.

However, he had to call it a day before SS9 - the 16.60 kilometre-run through Pissia 1, when his car refused to start.

While a spokesperson for the team has confirmed to Crash.net that he will be able to re-start under the SupeRally format on Sunday, the electrical problem pretty much guarantees he won't be able to add to his current 31 point tally, which puts him third in the drivers' championship.

"Yeah it's fairly disappointing. We could have got some good points this weekend, and to have a small technical problem like that stop us at this stage of the rally is annoying," confirmed the Aussie.

"But that's life, and we'll just have to work harder at the next few rallies and get some points back. In a situation like that sometimes you have to laugh, but it's not a laugh of joy."

It is IMO remarkable that Solberg is within striking distance of 1st. He's made up a tremendous amount of time and this is very, very promising for the new car!

I'm sad to see Vovos, Hadjitsopanis, and Pavlidis in the retiree list though.

    Cool

    SS20:
Citroen's Sebastien Loeb took the victory on the Acropolis Rally on Sunday, pacing himself through the final day's seven stages.

Loeb, who took the lead on the second loop on Friday, slipped behind his team-mate Dani Sordo on day two, when he picked up a puncture in SS9. The Frenchman re-took P1 in SS13 though, when Dani himself had tyre problems and Seb went into the final leg 28.7 seconds up on his closest rival.

After almost doubling his advantage on the first stage today, the Frenchman could afford to ease off through the remaining tests and he eventually won by over a minute. The result puts him back in the lead in the drivers' championship, albeit by just 1 point.

Subaru's Petter Solberg meanwhile took the runners-up spot and in doing so gave the new Impreza WRC2008, which was making its competitive debut in the World Rally Championship this weekend, a dream start.

Mikko Hirvonen inherited the final place on the podium, when Henning Solberg lost time with engine problems in SS17 and dropped down the leaderboard.

Urmo Aava was fourth in his privately entered Citroen C4 WRC car, followed by Dani Sordo and Britain's Matthew Wilson in fifth and sixth respectively, while Jari-Matti Latvala was seventh. Henning had to settle for eighth and the final drivers' points with Suzuki's Toni Gardemeister and Conrad Rautenbach completing the top ten.

My impressions are mixed. The private money to pay for graders dried up apparently, and any grading done was done before dozens of cars plowed everything up again. This led to people complaining about how tough the rallye is, but I can't help thinking 1) This is the Acropolis, it's been the toughest event in the WRC since before the term "WRC" came about and 2) What the matter? No mousse and the Pirellis go ouchy?

One question very few seem to be asking is how/why/when Ford became "favourites" when they lack someone of Gronholm's stature.

Solberg and Aava (mainly Aava, actually!) had performances that point to a "great" Acropolis. It's not drag racing. To be competitive one has to be smart, know when to attack and when to keep the car in one piece, and know what the car can tolerate vs. what will break it. Sure, the spectacle was diminished this year as far as "Sunday spectators" were concerned (not to mention the civil servant commentators on TV's ET1 government channel) but people that attend the rallye routinely saw a back-to-basics Acropolis (and hopefully didn't see the kitsch ceremony with fireworks and live DJs so the kiddies can jump up and down, pop pills, vomit etc.).

Man of the rallye IMO and "fastest man of the event" in the opinion of people that know more than me: Gigi Galli, the recipient of the Colin McRae award (McRae, BTW, has opened lots of holes and craters in the Greek countryside, has rolled during shakedowns etc., and is generally known for going completely ape%^! every year, hence the award in his honour. RIP).

Looking forward to next year, and hoping privateers can hit podium!
