    it is my understanding that the higher octane is not a performance enhancer but a preventative measure for detonation allowing you to run advanced timing. in reality anything felt by just the addition of higher octane fuel without a change to timing is just going to be in ones imagination unless you were experiencing engine knock already.

    This is really all about the "semantics" of fuel and octane. It's like the chicken before the egg story. Is the advanced timing the performance enhancer? Is it the higher octane fuel? Is it the unit (ECU or EMS) that advances the timing?

    The end result is the same, as long as you have:
    1. higher octane fuel
    2. ajustable timing
