    Post FIA - F1 engine freeze /restrictions !

The World Motor Sport Council of the FIA, the international racing authority that governs Formula One, among other series, has rolled out a series of restrictions on the development of F1 cars starting with the coming 2008 season.

The restrictions include a complete freeze on engine development for the next ten years. In a speech delivered last week in Monaco at the Motor Sport Business Forum, FIA President Max Mosley (pictured at right) justified the decision by pointing out that the engines developed by F1's six engine suppliers Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Toyota and Renault are already evenly matched and incredibly advanced: "There is no need to develop an F1 engine any further." (Heck, let's go back to foot-powered Flinstones-mobiles then.)

I can see the attempt of trying to limit the resources and keep the smaller teams in....but on the other hand isnt racing about finding the upper hand either with driving or the cars ability?

IMHO they found a way to make a boring series even worst.

did they also say they have to stop training with their drivers and the tires must now be wooden squares(still supplied by bridgestone).

    That seems rather foolish.

A freeze in development means a freeze in development expenses. I don't know how it would affect prospective new motor manufacturers (all none of them at the moment...) but I doubt the existing motor suppliers are keen on dumping millions into motor development programmes if they don't have to.

Umm...no. they'll keep developing a new engine for each year, they'll just find a way to make the existing configuration even better. It won't stop it, but it'll definitely steer it in a different direction. F1 is all about technology and development....the development never stops even when Max says it is supposed to.

IMHO, I think they'll just redirect what isn't spent on engine development to aero. Maybe there will be more than two wind tunnels for them to use come 2010? Just a thought...

I do agree this is rubbish, stupid even. As I stated above, F1 is SUPPOSED to be about technology and R&D. Cutting 1/3 or the appeal for us techies is just stupid. Not that I'm going to quit watching it or anything but it certainly reduces my web searches on the developments of my favorite teams.

motorsports in general isnt how it used to be. all these rules, regulations, and restrictions. soon everything will be like NASCAR (not that i have anything against it). Id like to see a comeback of thoes 500+hp rally cars and turbocharged F1/indy cars

Didn't one of the teams just buy like the 6th most powerful super computer in europe instead of a windtunnel? I forget which one. It seems like this will take something away from the manufacturers championship.
