    Almost hit this bird tonight

I was on my way home from my gf's house when I see this bird just strolling across the street! It was huge! It walked in front of my car for a while and then just stopped, bent it's legs and took off flying. I don't think I've ever seen a bird of that kind/size before in this area. Anyone know what kind it is?

Definitely a crane - perhaps a whooping crane (they make some serious noise). Glad you didn't hit it, they are a protected species, as they are near extinction. You would be charged with a federal crime, I believe. http://endangered.fws.gov/
