I owned two of those cars. I owned an 86 scirocco 8v 1.8L and an 89 16v 1.8L.
They are great cars. I know just about all there is to know about them. I dont know how familiar you are with them. If you ever have any questions about scirocco I will be glad to help.
I got a question. Can you find me one for 500 dollars that will run with no major reliability problems![]()

Thanks. It is in really good condition, minus a dent in the front quarter pannel and a partially cracked dash piece down by the drivers footwell. The seats though are immaculate. I think they're cleaner and in better condition than my WRX's!Originally posted by afpdl

Awesome! Did you have any problems with the '86 (since that's my same engine)? I will definitely remember to ask you for help. Right now I need to fix the fan switch (it only works on high), I can't get the sunroof to roll back, it'll only flip up. And I think the trunk latch is messed up because I can't get it to open.Originally posted by F1-racer

I'll keep an eye out for ya! I just happened upon this one. You should try searching on google for "craigslist" and then find out if they have a listing for your city. That's how I found this one. There's a lot of good deals on that site and it's free!Originally posted by afpdl

Right now... no. My girlfriend may need a 'commuter' car soon and this'll be it. But I do want to autocross it at some point. I think it'll be a fun little car for that. Only problem is it doesn't have power steering, so tight corners at low speed may be difficult.Originally posted by AjDaMan
That's damn clean! Nice grab! Any mods in the future?

Awesome!! I might be able to help you out a bit as well, I was in the VW scene for quite a while, and will be again one day when I finish my Jetta.

Beastcivic, the 86 never gave me much of a problem. I had the car for maybe 2-3 years. I remember replacing the fuel fuel pump in the tank, belts, motor mounts. (let stupid friend drive) other than those problems the car was real good to me. The engine was reliable. It ran strong up until the day I sold it. Thats when I bought the 16v. The 16v was definatly a faster and better ride. but Its reliability sucked. I thinks this is my own fault I bought a highly modified car with 82,000 miles. I was young and stupid. I had it for about 8 months and the tranny blew. The 16v trans is known to blow do to a missing e-clip from the factory. Finding the transmission for that car really sucked.
I would have to say the eight valve is probably the better car for you. The sixteen valve is more of a high maintenance vehicle especially with it being an (impact engine)you must be sure to change the timing belt.

Oh I forgot. I had the same problem with my factory sunroof. Does it make a buch of clicking and stipping noise? If it does its most likely the gear or cable in there. I remember the dealership wanted like 95.00 for the parts at that time that was a lot of money. So I would just assist it with my hand. Check a local junkyard. You might just get lucky. If you cant get your trunk open at all Just fold down the rear seats and remove the paneling. Wait I dont remember if there even is panelingBut anyways just try to pop it open with a long flat screw driver and get a better look at what might be the problem.
