Need to find a place close to GU

Hey all. I'll be starting at Georgetown med school this fall and I need to find a place for myself, my sister and her dog (75lbs pyrenees). I've been looking on rent.com and apartments.com but being that I'm not familiar with the area, I'm having a hard time choosing where to live. I'd prefer to live within 10 miles of the campus (or close to either the blue, orange, or red metro lines), so areas close to DC in Va and Md are cool. Safety is a must for my sister since she loves to walk her dog, so a nice neighborhood and such is a plus.

I'd definately appreciate ANY suggestions regarding areas to look at, areas to avoid, best locations, etc...etc...

    Thanks in advance.

    Sunny

my sister went to Georgetown undergrad. I'll try to get in touch with her (she lives in Boston now) and see if she can recommend any good areas.

I just did the apartment search, it's not fun around here. Not sure where to recommend close to GU, all I know is Georgetown isn't cheap to live in, so the best bet is probably to move outwards but near a metro line and ride that in. As far as where to search, rent.com and all those places are OK, but the best would probably be to search the montgomery county gazette or any other local papers and find better deals. Let me know if I can help you in any way.

    Another good site

    http://washingtondc.craigslist.org

It's a 'self post' free site. Lots of good info, I had a bunch of leads off there myself, just none of them worked out for me.

thank you all for the help and info. I agree that the rents are crazy! I'm paying 1500 for a nice 3 bedroom with garage around Evanston which is considered expensive and to get something comparable to that around DC, I'd have to pay 2000+!!!

Have any of you heard anything about the "Car Barn Apartments" on 14th Street NE (D.C.). It's located very close to the "Stadium Armory" metro station and is close to lincoln park so my sis can walk her polar bear . Is it a nice and "safe" place/area?

Other places that I'm considering are located in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and McLean. Any opinions on these locations?

    Thanks again folks.

Anything near the stadium/armory I personally don't consider to be 'safe' or 'nice'. Others may disagree, but from walking around there during the day I never really feel safe.

All the other areas you've mentioned have good/great parts, especially McLean (very 'uppity' area). The others have some shady parts of town too, so it all depends. Narrow it down a little and we can help you out.

Hey, I live in NW DC, about 2.5 miles from the G.Town campus. Specifically, I live in Cleveland Park. Really nice neighbourhood, right on the metro, etc., etc. I share a 1 bedroom with my girlfriend, and we pay a bit more than your old place. There are cheeper buildings around, but some don't let you have pets. I agree, the stadium/armoury can be a bit dodgey, especially at night. If I were you, I'd concentrate your search in NW DC, and some areas around Capital Hill. You might also want to check the

    Washington City Paper

They generally have good listings. Good luck, and welcome to DC.

ANY info regarding the above places (safety, area, convenience, traffic, etc...) will definately be appreciated. Of course your help will be compensated for when I have my, ahem...apartment warming par-tay. woo hoo.

Might as well get a list of al-key-hol going here. I'm getting most of the stuff here before I move since my older bro can hook me up (he bartends) I, myself am a guinness man, so expect plenty of that. not much for light beer, but if anyone likes pee j/k , I can get a case. got ton of crown, tanqueray, jack, and cuervo. Let me know what ya'll prefer. Trying to keep this exclusive to the clubwrx folks just to keep it from getting out of hand and me getting evicted in my first month.
