So I framed a poster print of my subi I took......got a question

So my wife strong armed me into getting one of my pics developed and framing it. I wanted to see just how large my camera would allow after cropping so naturally i had a print made 20" x 30" . After calling around I located a frame store close to my house, but was discouraged that they wanted $220 to frame my $20 print .

So I stopped by, picked out a $40 frame in 24 x 36 ( that had a buy one get one free frame sale so I got 2 for $40).

Now onto the matte. I really liked the way matte looked and wanted the more "artsy" approach, so I asked how much matte was. I was told it was $10 a 32" x 40" sheet uncut, or $32 a piece cut to size. I about keeled over. But wanting the pic to look nice, I picked a triple matte and had them cut it.

    Framed print turned out great!!

I started looking at mat cutters wanting to save money for next time and they are around $80-$150 for a decent one.

My question is: How many of you cut your own mat, or even frame your pics?

Heres the pic I framed (in High RES ofcourse this one is downsized for attachment purposes), I'll post a pic of the finished product when I get home.

I framed a drawing that I did a while back, with two views of a bugeye in wagon and sedan form. I was pleased with the result. I had my local Michael's do it.

Any chance you'd share the original hi-res file for the pic above? I REALLY like that.

Apparantly, Michaels frames are done by a company called Aaron Brothers. In the shopping center close to my house the two are right across the way from one another. It's actually cheaper I found out just to go into Aaron brothers instead of Michaels. So thats where I went.

Answering the size question: Whatever equates to 6MP or so, I guess.

Welcome to the world of custom framing/matting.

I had a series of polaroid transfers onto watercolor paper custom matted & framed in college. (There were 3, but I only have scans of 2 of them)
Cost an arm & a leg.

Yeah what was funny to me is cutting mat isn't that tough. And as a blank piece its cheap. Not to mention there is very little time involved in the whole framing process so the markup seems unreal.

    For example:

    I was quoted $220 for

    The same 24 x 36 frame I bought for $40
    3 pieces of cut mat
and installation time of around 20 min.

separatley I could have bought the mat 3 pieces @ $10 each uncut
    frame for $40
so total supplies to frame would be $70

    $220-$70= $150

$150 for 20 min of labor seems a little steep.

That equates to $450 an hour for using a simple cutter and putting a pic in a frame.

one thing i learned from my dad was that you can actually go to places like penn camera and buy disassembled frames. they are usually cheap and look nice. he used to work for national geographic, so he was really picky about how people handled his pictures. i liked the picture a lot and sent it to him and he said it was a great picture, too.

Ive framed a few of my pictures in 8 x 10....Went to Walmart and had it printed off in 8 x 10 for like $2, then went to the Dollar Store for a frame for $1. Looks nice too actually... But Ive always wanted to do some bigger than an 8x10 but i was told with my megapixel (6.1) that and 8x10 was about as big as I could go before I started sacrificing quality....Is that true?
