    Ok guys which DSLR.

So I'm thinkin about taking the plunge to DSLR. I really like my super zoom, (panasonic Fz5) but its lack of mega pixels (5.1) has left me wanting more. I have gotten the green light from teh wifey to do it, now the decision lies upon which one.

I just got back from best buy and they are having a sell on DSLR's.

They have the Canon Rebel XT kit with included 18-55mm kens, and a non IS 300mm lens for $799.

Or they have the same kit in the XTI for $999.

They also have the Sony A100 with a15-70mm and a 300mm lens for $999.

The D40x and the D80 are regular price.

    SO whatcha think?

Depends on what you will want to do with it.

Will you be making poster size prints? If you are, go for a higher mega pixel camera.

I have a Rebel XT and I find it more than satisfying with 8.1mp. But I don't long for huge prints.

The XT kit sounds like a pretty good deal, the 18-55mm lens is nothing great, but with the other camera's you'd be paying a few hundred $ more, so it sounds like you have some money to play around with. I'd go for the XT kit and just go buy another lens.

It really all comes down to how much photography you want to get into... hobby or professional.

Well currently I have a decent lens on my 5.1 super zoom and I can't blow pics up past an 11 x 14 when the conditions are perfect.

How large would the difference be between the xt and xti?

    How crucial is image stabilizing?

Anyone have any experience with the Sony Alpha A100? It has auto image stabilizing built into the body. So any lens you buy already have image stabilizing, and its compatible with all the old konica minolta lenses.

Seriously... get the XT kit. Use the money you saved to buy another lens.

Like I said, if you want to make HUGE prints... go with more mp's, but if your not, go with the XT kit. The 75-300mm lens is great!

What is the biggest print you can make with an XT clearly? The largest I could make with my 5.1 is 11 x 14 and I know I want the capability to do larger, but no bigger than like a 20 x 30.

i make 13x19 all the time for school with 8mp. i have made a few 20x30s. as long as you enlarge using photoshop and bicubic smoother you will be fine. you only need megapixils if you crop your pictures alot. save your money get a good lens.

ok. Went at lunch and looked at all the options again.

The Xt I like because of the above kit vlaue, but the Image Stabilizing lenses are very expensive and not sure if 8 MP s enough.

The XTi like because you get the additional focusing points (9) and you also get the dust cleaning sensor. And its 10.2 MP with larger display.

The Sony Alpha A100 I like because every lens you put on it has Image stabilizing. Its 10.2 MP and has a 2.5 readout. Plus it feels more comfortable than the other two.

With the XTi you should be able to make prints up to 24x36.

I don't know jack about the Sony alpha. Other than its only been out a little more than a year. Does Sony make their own lens'?

No they bought Konica Minolta's camera division. So its a Konica Lens with Sony circuitry, and the same CCD as the D200. It also borrows many of the good points of the Konica line. It has a dust cleaning feature etc. Auto Image stabilizing built into the body, so lenses are way cheaper.

Oh its also compatible with all the KM DSLR lenses, flashes, hot shoe stuff.

FWIW It was also voted 2006 DSLR of the year.

And the only complaint I can find is that pics shot above Iso 800 (which I never do) get noisy.

    XT+lens money FTW.

i've made 24x36 prints with no problems with the xt. the only real advantage i see is the xti has a bigger screen but that's more of a luxury as you're not really going to be able to see all that much until you get it on a computer anyways.

    Circuit City has the
xt w/ kit lense for $699
xti w/ kit lense for $899
and the sony alpha for $788

Plus they should have a $30 coupon off SLR's if you ask for it.

I hate circuit city though so don't buy from them.
