Nikon D40, Canon XT: Personal experience?

Im thinking about getting this to replace my kodak dx-7590, which is still a great camera. But I want lens options.

I was thinking about getting the Nikon D40, or Canon rebel xt.

I have looked at the online reviews but I dont really know too much about photography, so its almost useless for me to look at the reviews. About all I can tell is the nikon has a bigger screen. If someone can help me pick the right camera please chime in. Thanks

what are you planning on doing with the camera? i have an XT and it is a good camera for a beginning DSLR person. I have not experience with the Nikon version.

I do a lot of shooting with mine and will be doing photography for a group at the dragon nearly every weekend next season so i will be needing to move to a 30d or 40d when available for something a little faster.

I have had an issue with my XT just recently where the auto focus is having some problems, especially in low light. I am not sure why this is and may have to take it somewhere to be looked at (maybe a sensor or something is dirty..or dying).

overall it is a great camera, but i find myself doing a lot more photography stuff now that i have it and need to move to something faster and more suited to my needs.

for the average picture taker, it is awesome...gives some great pictures that a point and shoot camera couldnt give.

grayson bro, you need faster LENSES.... your camera is by no means the bottleneck there.

i have a 70-200mm F2.8 now and still have some trouble auto focusing in low light...

plus, i would have never thought i would notice the difference between 3 fps and the 5 fps the 30d has,,,,until going to the dragon and using my camera and a 30d. HUGE difference. the XT simply wont get the amount of shots off when you have a bike blowing thru a corner at 50mph like you can with a 30d or comparible body. up there is where i am noticing the biggest disadvantage for my purposes.

dont get me wrong, the XT is a great camera, especially for the money. for my purpose and the amount of shooting that will be at the dragon this year, i think it might be better suited as a backup instead of a primary though.

on the Nikon side, i would recommend the D50 over the D40. the D40 is nice, but you are limited to the AF-S lenses and can't use the prime lenses (like the 50mm 1.8)

you can get factory refurbed D50's for ~$350 and add ~$100 for the 50mm/1.8 and you have a nice starter setup.

use of better lenses > screen size

screen size doesn't matter. it's not used like the LCD screens on P&S camera's

what they don't tell you is that there's no battery, charger, strap, manual, etc.

    only buy from reputable dealers.

There are so many shady camera shops out there that you really need to check out this site before any purchase.

My all time favorite is www.bhphoto.com

I think I made my mind up and am just going to save up a little more and get the xti from here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search
