If you could only have one lens...

I've been wondering about this question, cause I'm starting to collect a bunch of equipment - old and new. It's nerdy, so I apologize, but I'm still curious, especially from the perspective of the pro and semi-pros out there.

If you could have only one lens to carry around 80%-90% of the time, for whatever situation might arise, in whatever conditions you're confronted with, what lens would it be?

For me, something around 22-70mm, 2.8, with macro. Anyone? Anyone?

If I could only have one lens, I would never have gotten an SLR.

I get ya, but I'm trying to gauge versatility here.

My Nikkor 18-70 is a pretty good all-around lens.

+1, although my 17-55mm f/2.8 is a very close second.
