it's a fireroad that starts at petites gap on the parkway near 501 and ends up near cave mtn lake. the mtn in the background is thunder ridge viewed from the north(ie. the picture is pointing S-SE).

Yep, the Appalachian Trail winds alongside the Parkway through that area, crossing it sometimes, and I believe it crosses the very fireroad you took. I backpacked through there many years ago.

yup, land of the free. they probably wouldn't appreciate my particular methods of driving on them but that's one of the reasons i don't complain too much at tax time.
