it's a composite of 3 pictures side by side, if you have cs2 or cs3 its under file-automate-photomerge, there are also some programs out there solely for putting together pictures like that, photostitch comes to mind

It almost looked like it had a fisheye effect and since there was no gradient to the sky side to side, gave the appearance of like an 18mm lens.

    Cool.

If you don't want a DSLR $$$ wise, but you want something that has virtually all the functionality at a way cheaper price buy this:

    http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Panas...oductDetail.do

I recommended it to a student here after I had a way older version, and they brought it in and I got to play with it.

Sweet digicam for $300. You can shoot raw mode, can adjust ISO's to 1250, It takes up to 60 sec exposures, has a 2.5" LCD, 12x Leica zoom equivalent to 432mm. Amazing value.

True but then you have to buy lenses. I'd be willing to bet that in a lot if not most circumstances, I could coax a better pic out of that lumix then the Rebel Xt (especially with the Xt's kit lens).

You'd almost be comparing Functionality wise:

    the Lumix FZ8 for $300

    vs.

    $500 Rebel XT
    28mm-300mm Sigma/Tamron/tokina lens $200 Non IS $800 for IS

For about the same quality of pics. Not to mention the Lumix has Image stabilizing where as the XT doesn't.

The benefit of that Lumix is that it has a Leica 36mm-432mm lens included that performs extremely well with very little barrel distortion and softing at the upper end. Plus it has full manual control and MF.

You should check one out just for fun. I have the Fz5 which is older and doesnt benefit from some of the FZ8's features, but if you want something that takes awesome pics, allows you professional control over a point and shoot and you arent worried about breaking your $$$$$$ DSLR, Id go for the lumix.

It'd be great for parties (where you are partaking), backpacking, hiking, the lake etc. Its small and lightweight about 60% of the size of my Sony DSLR.

Like I said tremendous value for a consumer grade camera.

you could probably find one with a kit lens for around 500 and it really just comes down to whether you want a point and shoot or an slr. in the end you'll definately be spending more but you'll also get a much more flexible camera with a much greater potential.

anyways, I must say CS3s photomerge is dramatically improved over CS2. you used to get all these misalignments and bad blending\geometry sometimes but CS3 is on point. another peaks shot....

This was the gulf before that small tropical storm. This is how it normally is.

Now it went to this from the storm.
