The passenger got hit (gently) in the arm by the yellow shrapnel. The fenders on the Caterham are designed to break away.

Road debris, car flipping, crashing out of control into a fence...hit a cone and it rips a fender off that hits you in the head, couple barrel rolls, window shatters spewing glass all over the place, another car drives out of control right into you, seatbelts rip and your head slams into windshield...
I dunno...I can't think of many reasons why you need a helmet to race...
