I miss that whole part of the country .. well at least until mid nov.. then its too cold for me. lol

Having grown up in upstate NY not far from the Berkshire and Adirondack mountains I got a bit spoiled. Everywhere else I go just seems so flat and bland. Florida was like another planet. lol

Never been there...but I'd love to check it out. I have been as far as the Lake George area and the Adirondacks though, which I suppose is close enough

Upstate NY is great...each area has its own character. Vermont and New Hampshire really give that untamed, "I am out in the middle of nowhere" feeling that's hard to replicate. Some of the hardest sections of the Appalachian Trail are there..love the Mount Washington area.

what I miss the most are the randomly abundant trail systems. Mtn biking up there is wicked. hello single track

Though I cant complain about that here, there are some really decent trail networks that evma maintains around Williamsburg.

Its not like up north though, you can roll down just about any street and find a trail to duck into that will lead you most often on one hell of a journey. lol.. being a kid there definitely had its perks. Winter sucks though. Sucks balls. .. big FROSTY ones.

Sorry for the copy/paste, but I'm surfing a V-Sat connection from northern Ethiopia, here's my today, and a few days extra of snapshots. Not the best of the best pics, crappy camera, a quick browse before I uploaded, but you get the idea.

Slept on a lava flow about 100m from the edge of a bubbling lava filled caldera last night. Should have brought my good camera, but I should know by now to bring it, and my POS camera when I travel. There aren't many volcanoes in the world that you can get this close to, has a lot to do with it's type, and composition. Tourists pay HUGE money to get here, we just took our "sky taxi" and were there in half an hour.

Being close to the Eritrean border the occasional batch of tourists is taken hostage by Eritrean mercanaries; for this reason there's a small militia village near the summit. With the road being washed out right now we were the solitary inhabitants, militia not in sight, of the mountain last night and didn't see another living creature except for the mice that decided to use me as part of their mouse super highway during the night. As I lay drifting off to sleep listening to the sounds of the lava sloshing and hissing I thought that for mice to survive there must be insects, which then led to me thinking if there's insects to eat, there must be scorpions, which of course brought me out of my sleepy state. I finally fell asleep around midnight, and we woke to the sunrise at about 6am.

The caldera; it's in a massive flow. The active pool is roughly 75m in diameter, and it's within a larger caldera that's ~300m in diameter, with 20m walls. We were on the edge of the larger caldera, likely 100m back from the leading edge of the pool.
